(07:33:17 PM) teddy-dbear [n=teddy-db@c-71-230-172-98.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(07:41:48 PM) jimbro [i=d1564997@gateway/web/ajax/mibbit.com/x-739dc25095133094] entered the room.
(07:42:09 PM) jimbro: Good Evening R$and And Mr dBear
(07:42:19 PM) jimbro: Randy
(07:42:36 PM) rmg: evening jimbro
(07:43:22 PM) teddy-dbear: hi jimbro
(07:43:31 PM) jimbro: Pat says Hi Randy And Teddy Good to see you both Hope All is Well
(07:43:35 PM) teddy-dbear: say hi to Pat for me
(07:44:26 PM) jimbro: Pat suggested to me that our next meeting be Questions and Answers
(07:45:20 PM) rmg: that's what most of our meetings turn into anyway
(07:45:37 PM) jimbro: That way we will find out where everybody is and can better help them
(07:45:46 PM) rmg: we want to try to get back on track with a topic to cover
(07:46:24 PM) jimbro: Do you know of any ISP that is linux friendly/
(07:46:32 PM) jimbro: ?
(07:46:37 PM) rmg: that was a question we intend to ask
(07:47:23 PM) rmg: none really are
(07:48:03 PM) rmg: you may need Windows to get set up, but after that you should be good with anybody
(07:48:34 PM) rmg: it's been a long time since I had to set something up from scratch
(07:52:17 PM) jimbro: I get the feeling that one of these ISP's is going to develop a CD that will be linux friendly and make a mint
(07:52:42 PM) rmg: maybe one of these days
(07:53:04 PM) rmg: mostly you just need to set up the account
(07:53:28 PM) jimbro: I don't think it needs to be Red Hat or Knoppix or any specific distro
(07:55:09 PM) rmg: you can do that by phone if necessary
(07:56:41 PM) jimbro: How so ?
(07:57:33 PM) rmg: I did that with a friends Vista laptop
(07:58:07 PM) jimbro: Thats 5 letters of a 4 letter word with me
(07:58:14 PM) rmg: when she got it Verison didn't have a Vista cd
(07:58:28 PM) rmg: stop partway through
(07:58:47 PM) rmg: called them on the phone to finish the setup
(07:59:28 PM) jimbro: ok
(08:00:15 PM) rmg: just pick one you like and care to pay for then worry about the setup
(08:00:36 PM) jedijf [n=jimf@unaffiliated/jedijf] entered the room.
(08:00:45 PM) jimbro: wonder who's going to show tonight
(08:00:52 PM) jimbro: Hi Jedi
(08:00:56 PM) jedijf: hi
(08:01:43 PM) jimbro: Pat says A great big Hello to Jedi
(08:01:59 PM) jedijf: hello pat
(08:02:42 PM) jimbro: You sound Down and Tired -- A Long Day?
(08:03:00 PM) jedijf: yep 2 am start
(08:03:49 PM) jimbro: I'd be ready for a nap also
(08:04:09 PM) jimbro: Thank Randy
(08:04:18 PM) jimbro: Thanks Randy
(08:34:58 PM) Jfrost [i=jfrost@BURTON-ONE-FIFTY-FIVE.MIT.EDU] entered the room.
(08:35:59 PM) rmg: now there is someone we haven't seen for awhile
(08:37:18 PM) jimbro: Hi Mr Frost
(08:37:55 PM) Jfrost: hi
(08:38:11 PM) jimbro: I don't believe we've met
(08:38:40 PM) rmg: he's so last year
(08:39:04 PM) jimbro: one of the monthlys?
(08:39:53 PM) kb3ui [n=kb3ui@h-67-100-132-37.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.
(08:40:23 PM) jimbro: Hi kb3ui
(08:40:36 PM) kb3ui: Good evening, jimbro and the gang!
(08:40:48 PM) kb3ui: jfrost - *the* jfrost from MIT?
(08:41:41 PM) Jfrost: yes
(08:41:52 PM) Jfrost: wassup?
(08:42:14 PM) kb3ui: *The* jfrost who apparently hasn't forgotten his roots in PACS?
(08:42:22 PM) Jfrost: never
(08:42:38 PM) kb3ui: Great! How are things going for you up there in Cambridge?
(08:42:57 PM) Jfrost: hard as hell tooling atm figured i'd check in
(08:44:09 PM) kb3ui: I can imagine!! I'm sure it's difficult just adjusting to a lot of new things! We're so glad you did check in, and hope we offer just a little taste of home! Have you heard about PACS' new meeting place?
(08:45:10 PM) Jfrost: genaurdi's?
(08:45:17 PM) rmg: Giant
(08:45:22 PM) Jfrost: ah
(08:45:25 PM) Jfrost: is it nice?
(08:45:41 PM) rmg: small but nice
(08:45:51 PM) rmg: we only have 4 rooms
(08:45:52 PM) kb3ui: It's a lot like a hotel conference center, believe it or not!
(08:46:29 PM) Jfrost: sounds nice
(08:46:36 PM) rmg: and they are very picky about the number of people in the rooms
(08:46:49 PM) jimbro: named after the 3 roller coasters of the old Willow Grove Park
(08:47:03 PM) Jfrost: haha sounds fun
(08:47:04 PM) kb3ui: That's the only downside. And, no more Security SIG, without its fearless leader!
(08:47:07 PM) Jfrost: how is pacs doing?
(08:47:18 PM) Jfrost: sorry, long commute
(08:47:21 PM) jimbro: Alps - Scenic - Thunderbolt
(08:47:23 PM) rmg: holding it's own
(08:47:47 PM) Jfrost: i'm glad to hear
(08:48:10 PM) kb3ui: Weak excuse - you should try to be there virtually - videoconferencing :) Seriously, you've got plenty else on your hands, now.
(08:48:50 PM) kb3ui: Lots of SIGs come and go with changing times and changing leaders.
(08:48:51 PM) Jfrost: i've never had so much worrk in my life
(08:49:04 PM) Jfrost: my friend may be moving to the area
(08:49:14 PM) Jfrost: he may be joining you guys
(08:49:32 PM) kb3ui: You need to concentrate on what's important - your schoolwork of course. Especially at first until you get used to it.
(08:49:39 PM) jimbro: got a name?
(08:49:43 PM) kb3ui: Your friend is our friend!
(08:49:53 PM) kb3ui: Mi casa es su casa.
(08:50:13 PM) Jfrost: haha well u'll like him, he's a security specialist, deals more with a different side of security than me
(08:50:17 PM) jimbro: high school Spanish strikes again
(08:50:23 PM) Jfrost: haha
(08:50:38 PM) kb3ui: jfrost - just wait until being in Boston this winter makes you live up to your handle!
(08:51:12 PM) kb3ui: Your friend will be quite welcome at PACS.
(08:51:28 PM) Jfrost: he's a nice guy, and definately today was only the first day of fall
(08:51:43 PM) kb3ui: Dorm food any good?
(08:51:59 PM) kb3ui: You're in the dorm, right?
(08:54:14 PM) kb3ui: Burton 155, right?
(08:55:15 PM) kb3ui: Me thinks that Ben's brain just exploded.
(08:55:38 PM) kb3ui: or at least blew a fuse or tripped a circuit breaker from overload.
(08:57:37 PM) kb3ui: I think that last Saturday's meeting was an "eyeball" version of one of our Monday night chats. Many of us were working on lots of different Linux-related projects, and we all interacted with each other.
(08:58:05 PM) kb3ui: It's not always necessary to have a specific topic every meeting.
(08:58:18 PM) rmg: but it helps
(08:58:33 PM) InHisName [n=InHisNam@c-71-225-221-149.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(08:58:44 PM) jimbro: But it is nice
(08:58:46 PM) kb3ui: This time was good just to get to know the new meeting place. However, I wouldn't want to do this every month.
(08:59:17 PM) kb3ui: It's good to plan on a meeting topic, and resort to the informals when things fall through or we have extra time.
(08:59:31 PM) kb3ui: Good evening, Rich!
(09:00:20 PM) jimbro: Hi rich and Pat says hI too
(09:00:51 PM) InHisName: Hi everybody
(09:01:17 PM) Ben_ [i=jfrost@BURTON-ONE-FIFTY-FIVE.MIT.EDU] entered the room.
(09:01:25 PM) InHisName: How are we doing tonight?
(09:01:34 PM) InHisName: Hello Ben? from MIT ?
(09:01:36 PM) kb3ui: Ben from MIT is with us tonight!
(09:02:03 PM) kb3ui: Actually, Ben is here in person and in ghost (jfrost) apparently.
(09:02:20 PM) InHisName: What is burton one fifty five all about, ben.
(09:02:51 PM) Ben_: yes be from mit
(09:02:54 PM) Ben_: sorry was changing rooms
(09:03:00 PM) Ben_: nope burton conner 4th floor
(09:03:03 PM) Ben_: 424f
(09:03:55 PM) InHisName: Hmmm, traceability to narrow bunch of students ehh?
(09:04:11 PM) Ben_: if i want to be hidden ic an be
(09:04:17 PM) Ben_: we all can
(09:04:20 PM) Ben_: we just choose nto to
(09:05:06 PM) InHisName: Ben In case you haven't heard we moved to new meeting place on Sats. Had our first last Sat.
(09:05:20 PM) Jfrost left the room (quit: Nick collision from services.).
(09:05:49 PM) Ben_ is now known as Jfrost
(09:08:23 PM) jimbro left the room (quit: "http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client").
(09:16:11 PM) jimbro [i=d1564928@gateway/web/ajax/mibbit.com/x-4280bb2eedf6ee3c] entered the room.
(09:19:35 PM) InHisName: whats happening? any talk at all ?
(09:20:14 PM) kb3ui: Rich, we were talking earlier about last Saturday's meeting, and with Ben about how life is for him in Cambridge, MA.
(09:20:29 PM) kb3ui: He's aware of our new meeting place.
(09:21:14 PM) kb3ui: Nice, but small!
(09:21:41 PM) kb3ui: What was your impression?
(09:23:20 PM) jimbro left the room (quit: "http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client").
(09:25:12 PM) Jfrost: food brb
(09:28:33 PM) Jfrost: nvm not done
(09:28:38 PM) jimbro [i=cf45f8e4@gateway/web/ajax/mibbit.com/x-c81078f278bf4d1d] entered the room.
(09:28:43 PM) kb3ui: Breakfast time?
(09:28:48 PM) Jfrost: no cooking time
(09:28:52 PM) Jfrost: i'm making stir fry
(09:29:06 PM) kb3ui: What meal? So much for my query about dorm food!
(09:29:35 PM) kb3ui: College students live in their own time zones.
(09:30:45 PM) InHisName: Is boston time zone different than Eastern ?
(09:31:22 PM) kb3ui: He's on Ben Standard Time, not Eastern Time as is Boston.
(09:31:51 PM) Jfrost: hah
(09:31:51 PM) kb3ui: Multitasking at least a dozen things at once, I'll bet!
(09:32:29 PM) Jfrost: sorry using 3 different os's at once
(09:32:29 PM) kb3ui: How many hours of sleep do you get now, Ben?
(09:32:39 PM) Jfrost: i need to get my 360 to do stuff
(09:32:44 PM) Jfrost: i dont want to think about it
(09:33:03 PM) kb3ui: Probably not much worse than when you were home, if I recall correctly!
(09:34:48 PM) Jfrost: actually much
(09:35:27 PM) kb3ui: You can't get much worse than 3 hours of sleep, Ben!
(09:35:41 PM) Jfrost: nah i was averaging more like 5
(09:35:44 PM) Jfrost: now i'm up to 3
(09:35:45 PM) kb3ui: You were up to 3 AM on school nites
(09:36:35 PM) Jfrost: yeah but i would sleep more on weekends
(09:36:37 PM) Jfrost: and other nights
(09:36:56 PM) kb3ui: The average human being needs 9 (count them) 9 hours of sleep per night on average.
(09:37:16 PM) kb3ui: 3 .ne. 9
(09:37:30 PM) Jfrost: haha
(09:37:37 PM) Jfrost: yeah mit beings arent real humans
(09:37:49 PM) kb3ui: College students aren't human.
(09:38:29 PM) Jfrost: hhaha
(09:38:44 PM) kb3ui: You should work on getting more sleep, before you finally break down.
(09:38:50 PM) InHisName: I used to do 4.5 for a long while. Although 5 to 5.5 was prefered by my body. Now I am more 6 ish.
(09:39:11 PM) Jfrost: i would love 6 hours
(09:39:48 PM) InHisName: Break down 20 minutes after last class before Thanksgiving and Christmas. and Summer.
(09:42:37 PM) InHisName: If I got 6 hours or more then I felt like I had bad case of flu. I did NOT crave more sleep.
(09:43:00 PM) InHisName: Back then, now 6 or 7 is ok.
(09:44:20 PM) kb3ui: InHisName you' rneot human, either.
(09:44:30 PM) kb3ui: you're not human, either!
(09:45:42 PM) InHisName: Just another older college student. Maybe you missed all the excitement (overslept)
(09:46:32 PM) Jfrost: haha
(09:46:38 PM) Norm75 [n=Norm@c-76-116-10-164.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.
(09:46:57 PM) kb3ui: Trying to run Xubuntu under Virtual Box under Windows XP on my Dell desktop computer, over my LAN instead of the hard drive. Slow!
(09:47:26 PM) kb3ui: Good evening, Norm! Say hi to Ben from MIT!
(09:47:55 PM) kb3ui: who never sleeps!
(09:48:21 PM) Norm75: Hello, Russ, Ben & everyone.
(09:48:38 PM) InHisName: Hey I am running out of Win95 boot floppies startup disks to make an iso out of. They all seem to have bad sectors.
(09:48:46 PM) jimbro: Hi Norm
(09:48:49 PM) InHisName: Anyone got a good one left around.?
(09:48:59 PM) InHisName: Hi Norm75
(09:49:09 PM) jimbro: Did you ever figure out that projector?
(09:49:25 PM) Norm75: Hello Jimbro.
(09:49:26 PM) kb3ui: Later versions of Windows don't seem to have boot floppies, beyond 98.
(09:49:37 PM) Jfrost: brb
(09:49:40 PM) jimbro: I've got one or two
(09:49:56 PM) kb3ui: If you have 95 runnung on a hard drive, you can make startup floppies.
(09:50:01 PM) InHisName: I know but I need a win95 startup disk cause the win95 install CD does NOT boot.
(09:50:59 PM) kb3ui: Can u install win95 on an unused hard drive? You should be able to do that from the CD?
(09:51:23 PM) InHisName: The third one is nearly an hour buzzing away and finding a buzzillion of errors.
(09:52:07 PM) InHisName: Nope, kb3ui need a startup floppy to run the CD to install.
(09:52:47 PM) InHisName: Since my vbox does not have a floppy drive and don't want one either, I want an iso of the floppy.
(09:53:36 PM) InHisName: I am nearing the end of making the 3rd worthless iso file from a buzzillion read errors.
(09:54:03 PM) jimbro: no good because you will have to change the cd driver to get it to boot
(09:54:34 PM) Norm75: InHisName, you might find what you need here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
(09:54:53 PM) InHisName: Hmmm, thanks Norm75
(09:54:54 PM) jimbro: yeah Norm
(09:58:38 PM) Jfrost: back
(09:59:53 PM) kb3ui: How was dinner?
(10:02:14 PM) InHisName: Mine was lip smakin' good.
(10:02:36 PM) InHisName: Home made speghettii
(10:02:38 PM) jimbro: Gentlemen It's 10 and I have to get Pat her tea and Meds So I'll wish you all a pleasant evening
(10:02:46 PM) jimbro left the room (quit: "http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client").
(10:02:46 PM) kb3ui: Ben, to pass on for what it's worth, I had a faculty advisor back at Argonne who said he'd rather we students would socialize with each other than wash dishes.
(10:03:15 PM) kb3ui: It saves money, but costs a lot in time, which you don't have much of.
(10:03:18 PM) InHisName: sauce with 6 fresh picked garden vegetables. Tomatoes were fresh too that made the sauce.
(10:03:20 PM) Jfrost: haha
(10:03:34 PM) Jfrost: ask ur friend at argonne if he knows eric michaud
(10:03:35 PM) kb3ui: You ate well, Rich!
(10:04:04 PM) InHisName: indee!
(10:04:09 PM) InHisName: indeed!
(10:04:19 PM) kb3ui: This was back in 1970, when I was a senior in a research program there. Doubt if he's still there, much less knows Eric Michaud.
(10:04:49 PM) kb3ui: Ancient History: we had an IBM 360 and a CDC 3600.
(10:05:07 PM) Jfrost: nice
(10:05:49 PM) kb3ui: But his principle still holds true. Got to use your spare time wisely as well as your study time. If you have to cook, make easy stuff. Eat out as often as your budget allows.
(10:07:19 PM) kb3ui: Another friend of mine told me he considered his spare time worth at least $1.00 per hour, and wouldn't spend time to save any less than that.
(10:08:38 PM) Norm75 left the room (quit: "Leaving.").
(10:10:04 PM) InHisName: jimbro then norm who else will bail soon.
(10:10:46 PM) kb3ui: You need a button sewn - a dry cleaner will do it for you.
(10:11:55 PM) kb3ui: Better to play with computers than to sew buttons yourself.
(10:12:09 PM) kb3ui: if you even know how, which I don't!
(10:12:40 PM) kb3ui: Free advice is worth its price.
(10:15:09 PM) kb3ui: I've gotten an Xubundu screen with 4 icons (Floppy, Trash, home, File System) but no Start. Anyone have idea what might be happening? Can't do anything with it.
(10:16:12 PM) kb3ui: Running under Virtual Box, if that has anything to do with it.
(10:16:36 PM) jedijf: right click in the desktop
(10:17:56 PM) Norm76 [n=Norm@c-76-116-10-164.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.
(10:19:04 PM) kb3ui: OK, but I just get options that don't do anything: Creat Launcher, Create URL Link, Create Folder, Create from Template, Desktop Settings.
(10:20:16 PM) InHisName: Norm76: you came back
(10:20:41 PM) kb3ui: Norm, I was saying, I've gotten an Xubundu screen with 4 icons (Floppy, Trash, home, File System) but no Start. Anyone have idea what might be happening? Can't do anything with it. Jim Fisher has suggested that I right click.
(10:21:09 PM) jedijf: kb3ui: panel on xubu is on top
(10:21:22 PM) jedijf: scroll up if possible - look for applications
(10:21:31 PM) kb3ui: Desktop Preferences - get Allow Xfce to manage the desktop which is clicked Appearance, and Behavior
(10:21:59 PM) kb3ui: Jim, scroll in WIndows or Xubuntu screen?
(10:22:02 PM) jedijf: when i right click in my vbox install in office menu comes up
(10:22:06 PM) Norm76: Run the mouse slowly around the edges starting at the top. The bar might be hidden for some reason.
(10:22:08 PM) jedijf: xubu
(10:24:03 PM) kb3ui: Scrolling or clicking doesn't seem to do anything - I think I know what both of you mean, and that has worked for me in the past, but not in this case. I wonder if I have a hosed Xubuntu installation and should just reinstall. This did work at least once before.
(10:24:44 PM) jedijf: do you have a scroll bar?
(10:25:30 PM) kb3ui: No, in any direction.
(10:25:39 PM) kb3ui: Nor in Windows for that matter.
(10:25:58 PM) kb3ui: This is a naked xubuntu screen if I ever saw one!
(10:26:58 PM) Norm76: This is what you should be seeing: http://www.reviewlinux.com/graphics/xubuntu710rc/xubuntu710rc.html
(10:27:19 PM) kb3ui: I'll take a look at that.
(10:29:13 PM) kb3ui: I'm running Puppy Linux under Virtual Box on my laptop, and it has a lot more. jedijf - I can run Linux virtually on my laptop, but it takes a lot of time to come up, so on Saturday I was just looking for Linux stuff on the Internet and did it with the native Windows 2000.
(10:30:13 PM) kb3ui: Only 191 Meg RAM, it's asking a lot of the machine to run both OSs at the same time, but it can do it. Like now.
(10:32:24 PM) kb3ui: Coming up, in its own good time.....
(10:33:46 PM) kb3ui: The main reason why I just installed the new release of Virtual Box on my desktop rather than my notebook.
(10:33:54 PM) kb3ui: Should be much faster!
(10:34:10 PM) jedijf: need sleep - see ya
(10:34:12 PM) jedijf left the room.
(10:35:39 PM) kb3ui: Ok, the stuff above the blue screen "Application", etc. is what was cut off. Can't seem to bring it up here.
(10:37:12 PM) kb3ui: This is the Xubuntu installation that I'm proposing our SIG distribute as a standardized Virtual Box client to run under Windows. So I want to make sure it's perfect.
(10:37:21 PM) Norm76: The "Applications" button is the top of the Xubuntu screen anyway. There are just ads above that. But I do find that interesting that you can see or get to them.
(10:37:44 PM) Norm76: ...is this a widescreen laptop?
(10:38:54 PM) kb3ui: Me too! One other item - I did this installation from my laptop, but am now running it on a network server. I get the same problem with my laptop or my widescreen (1200 + pixels ) Dell desktop .
(10:39:30 PM) kb3ui: The hard drive it's booting from is on a network, but I can't see how that would have anything to do with this.
(10:40:35 PM) Norm76: You don't have the applications bar on the bottom either (where the trash can is in the lower right corner), do you?
(10:40:42 PM) kb3ui: This has to run on any computer. I've pretty well documented how I installed the Xubuntu on the virtual hard drive, so it's no big problem to reinstall. But I just wanted to make sure I haven't done anything obviously wrong.
(10:41:19 PM) kb3ui: No, I don't have the trash can, either.
(10:41:41 PM) kb3ui: Just the 4 icons on the blueish screen. Weird!
(10:43:18 PM) kb3ui: I'd think that if something was corrupted, I'd get some error message somewhere on the bootup.
(10:43:27 PM) rmg: did you try a reboot?
(10:43:30 PM) Norm76: I'm wondering if the virtual machine is at a higher resolution than the host, and the top and bottom are being cut off for that reason.
(10:44:24 PM) kb3ui: Norm, that might be. Randy, this is the second time I've booted from this "snapshot" if you get my Virtual Box terminology, from a different computer, and with the same result.
(10:44:32 PM) Norm76: When in the virtual machine, does the mouse stop or disappear when you take it past the top of the screen.
(10:44:44 PM) Norm76: ?
(10:45:06 PM) kb3ui: Top, it stops. Bottom it disappears. Left it stops. Right it disappears.
(10:45:24 PM) kb3ui: I'd think it would be the opposite.
(10:47:07 PM) Norm76: Take it all the way to the left edge and then go down well past the bottom edge. I'm thinking the top part of a menu might pop up.
(10:48:09 PM) kb3ui: It won't let me look at the video resolution of the virtual machine while it's running, but I will look at that when I take it down.
(10:48:33 PM) kb3ui: The cursor disappears, but nothing else happens. Doesn't "feel" as if it can go much farther beyond the lower margin.
(10:48:37 PM) Norm76: If not leave it down there and click once.
(10:49:10 PM) Norm76: Hit or miss, trying to click on something you can't see.
(10:49:17 PM) kb3ui: Left click does nothing. Right click brings up Create Launcher Create URL Link Create FOlder Create from Template Desktop Settings.
(10:49:34 PM) Norm76: It was worth a shot.
(10:50:27 PM) kb3ui: Yes, but I think you're on the right track with the resolution problem. Only a small portion of the Xubuntu screen appears on my monitor, surrounded by a lot of white space.
(10:52:00 PM) kb3ui: The host screen is 1280 by 1024 pixels, but only a little bit of that is being used by Xubuntu.
(10:52:39 PM) kb3ui: Thanks, Norm, I'll take a look at the virtual screen resolution and see if I can change that.
(10:53:24 PM) rmg: need sleep
(10:53:40 PM) kb3ui: Me too! Good night, Randy.
(10:53:59 PM) kb3ui: Norm, I hope to see you and the rest of the crowd next Monday.
(10:54:29 PM) kb3ui: I'm a human being, unlike Ben and Rich, here. You guys carry on!
(10:55:29 PM) kb3ui: Ben, we'd be glad to have you join us online whenever you can! Take care!
(10:55:49 PM) kb3ui left the room (quit: ""Good night!"").
(11:22:47 PM) Jfrost: i'm out for the night time to do work
(11:22:56 PM) Jfrost left the room (quit: "Leaving").
