(07:23:52 PM) teddy-dbear [n=teddy-db@c-71-230-172-98.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(07:25:27 PM) mode (+o rmg51 ) by ChanServ

(07:26:32 PM) rmg51 has changed the topic to: Do we want to meet in Aug. at Giant?

(07:27:00 PM) mode (-o rmg51 ) by rmg51

(07:33:34 PM) jimbro [i=d1564ad8@gateway/web/ajax/mibbit.com/x-a4cf418a79bd5306] entered the room.

(07:34:35 PM) jimbro: Monsieur DBear

(07:34:48 PM) jimbro: Randy How are you My friend

(07:35:10 PM) rmg: doing good

(07:35:39 PM) rmg: still a little early for most of the guys

(07:35:58 PM) jimbro: Of Course

(07:38:58 PM) yoda_van [n=jedijf@unaffiliated/jedijf] entered the room.

(07:39:46 PM) jimbro: Knight of JEDI How are you my friend

(07:41:06 PM) yoda_van: very well, and you?

(07:41:39 PM) jimbro: Very good. thank you for asking

(07:49:38 PM) jimbro07 [i=d1564ad8@gateway/web/ajax/mibbit.com/x-e308e8d641fcb603] entered the room.

(08:14:26 PM) Ronn [n=chatzill@c-71-58-183-203.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(08:15:17 PM) Ronn: hello all

(08:15:26 PM) rmg: evening

(08:16:12 PM) Ronn: i'm a convert

(08:16:37 PM) rmg: but not to Ubuntu yet

(08:17:09 PM) Ronn: i haven't had time to install it yet. That's the project for this week

(08:17:22 PM) Ronn: for make it a dual boot with SUSE

(08:18:37 PM) yoda_van: Ronn, get anywhere with rpm?

(08:18:49 PM) Ronn: not yet

(08:18:58 PM) Ronn: still having problems

(08:19:29 PM) Ronn: I'll read through it again and take it step by step

(08:19:33 PM) yoda_van: i think the graphic package installer may still be yast, or possibly yast2

(08:20:10 PM) Ronn: that's what it is. We started that today

(08:20:48 PM) yoda_van: it's been awhile since i had a suse install

(08:21:07 PM) Ronn: I like it so far after on two days of class and a weekend with it

(08:21:28 PM) Ronn: Image what will happen by September

(08:22:04 PM) yoda_van: you'll be hooked

(08:22:27 PM) Ronn: I plan to be

(08:22:39 PM) rmg: there will be 2 linux sigs come sept

(08:23:21 PM) Ronn: lol

(08:23:37 PM) Ronn: One still needs to be the computer sig

(08:23:56 PM) rmg: but all about linux

(08:24:29 PM) jimbro07: How is that possible to have 2 linux sigs?

(08:24:44 PM) yoda_van: possibel, anything is

(08:24:49 PM) yoda_van: possible too

(08:25:24 PM) jimbro07: one ubuntu and one SUSE or linux?

(08:25:48 PM) Ronn: that's a possibility

(08:27:34 PM) yoda_van: too confusing to make it distro specific since they are more similar than different

(08:27:53 PM) yoda_van: the biggest difference is package mangement

(08:28:08 PM) yoda_van: apt vs rpm and synaptic vs yast

(08:28:54 PM) Ronn: once i figure it out maybe

(08:29:07 PM) Ronn: \are you guys meeting at GIANt in August?

(08:30:10 PM) rmg: who knows

(08:34:40 PM) rmg: not enough people in here to make a decision

(08:34:56 PM) Ronn: I've got to finish studying. Tonight's reading is Managing directories and files in LINUX.

(08:35:33 PM) Ronn left the room (quit: "ChatZilla 0.9.83 [Firefox 3.0.1/2008070208]").

(08:35:52 PM) yoda_van: ok well cd /homework and cat reading

(08:40:40 PM) jimbro07: Which book are you reading?

(08:41:14 PM) jimbro07: Oops he left i see

(08:53:11 PM) yoda_van left the room (quit: "Time to make the donuts.").

(08:54:04 PM) rmg: going to be a long dull night

(09:03:31 PM) jimbro07 left the room (quit: "http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client").

(09:03:31 PM) jimbro left the room (quit: "http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client").

(09:07:22 PM) jimbro [i=cf45f953@gateway/web/ajax/mibbit.com/x-a5fbf053a305c8e3] entered the room.

(09:07:58 PM) jimbro: Once again Microsoft XP strikes

(09:08:12 PM) rmg: works for me

(09:08:28 PM) rmg: or I should say it works for Teddy

(09:08:36 PM) jimbro: I wish it didn't work so well

(09:08:58 PM) rmg: well, we are a Linux group

(09:09:42 PM) jimbro: I will be using Ubuntu for this meeting later on this year

(09:12:00 PM) jimbro: How many would we need for an opinion on an Aug meeting at GIANT?

(09:12:29 PM) rmg: it would be nice if it was more then 2

(09:12:48 PM) jimbro: It would

(09:13:07 PM) rmg: most of the regulars haven't been here the last few weeks

(09:13:48 PM) rmg: if they don't sign in, there is no point in talking about a meeting

(09:14:03 PM) jimbro: Its hard to get any kind of group until after Labor Day

(09:14:04 PM) rmg: right now it's just me

(09:14:34 PM) rmg: we have done it in the past

(09:14:53 PM) rmg: we didn't meet last summer

(09:15:28 PM) rmg: we might not meet this summer if no one comes into chat to talk about it

(09:15:58 PM) jimbro: I understand

(09:16:53 PM) jimbro: and all the different vacation schedules and trips

(09:18:08 PM) rmg: that's why it might take a few weeks to come to a decision

(09:18:38 PM) jimbro: Pat (my wife) says "Hi" to Teddy

(09:19:06 PM) teddy-dbear: hi Pat

(09:20:24 PM) jimbro: you are probably very right

(09:21:26 PM) jimbro: You want to wrap it up or give it another 10 or so

(09:22:15 PM) rmg: this computer is always on and signed into 2 other chat rooms

(09:22:28 PM) rmg: we can call it a night anytime

(09:22:49 PM) rmg: I can leave this room open just in case

(09:23:43 PM) jimbro: Then I will wish you a grand evening

(09:24:03 PM) jimbro: and say goodnight to Mr DBear

(09:24:11 PM) jimbro left the room (quit: "http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client").

(09:24:11 PM) rmg: me and the bear might just hang out for a little longer

(09:51:16 PM) InHisName [n=Administ@c-71-225-221-149.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(09:51:52 PM) InHisName: Hi

(09:52:11 PM) InHisName: Anyone else check in earlier ?

(09:52:29 PM) rmg: a few

(09:52:50 PM) rmg: did you see the subject?

(09:54:43 PM) InHisName: Yes, just did. I can meet so far anyway.

(09:57:00 PM) rmg: we need to set it up with Giant and send out an email to all members

(10:08:29 PM) InHisName: ok

(10:08:35 PM) kb3ui [n=kb3ui@h-67-100-131-240.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.

(10:09:09 PM) kb3ui: Fine with me!

(10:09:24 PM) rmg: that makes 3 of us

(10:09:34 PM) kb3ui: I was afraid of that!

(10:09:35 PM) rmg: 4 counting Teddy

(10:09:44 PM) kb3ui: 3 talking members.

(10:09:59 PM) kb3ui: Rich, you and me the others?

(10:10:54 PM) kb3ui: Where's everyone else - enjoying the summer?

(10:11:13 PM) InHisName: Probably, I was off to church camp last week.

(10:11:40 PM) kb3ui: Rich, I know you were away in July. But I thought there were more people interested and available for August.

(10:11:42 PM) rmg: others were in here on time

(10:11:51 PM) rmg: you 2 are here late

(10:12:09 PM) kb3ui: All right, rub it in! For your information, I took a very enjoyable walk on the coolest day of the week! :)

(10:12:47 PM) InHisName: I was spending a buncha time trying to boot up the computer.

(10:12:57 PM) rmg: do before 8 pm on Mondays

(10:12:57 PM) InHisName: It is up now.

(10:13:10 PM) kb3ui: Also, trying to get Pidgin (GAIM substitute) to run on Xubuntu running under Virtual Box under WIndows.

(10:13:22 PM) kb3ui: Ended up doing it the old way.

(10:13:32 PM) kb3ui: WIll try again later.

(10:13:56 PM) kb3ui: Randy, who was here earlier tonight?

(10:15:15 PM) rmg: Jim, Ronn and jimbro

(10:15:30 PM) rmg: slow night

(10:15:42 PM) kb3ui: Great! But none of them can make it for a meeting in August at Giant?

(10:16:23 PM) kb3ui: 6 people + 1 bear are not a slow night IMHO.

(10:16:43 PM) InHisName: That's a pretty good night for us.

(10:16:51 PM) rmg: 4 people and a bear

(10:16:58 PM) InHisName: Whhhaaaat only ONE bear tonight ?

(10:17:07 PM) rmg: yep

(10:17:26 PM) kb3ui: Especially when we hear from old timers who haven't been too active. Jim, Ronn, Jimbro, Randy, Rich, and RUss = 6.

(10:18:06 PM) InHisName: Jim ?=? jedijf ?

(10:18:14 PM) rmg: but not at the same time

(10:18:23 PM) rmg: yep

(10:19:32 PM) InHisName: Of the 6, how many said they might come to Aug meeting ?

(10:19:39 PM) kb3ui: I'd make more of an effort to be there at the same time if others were. You and Teddy are it at 8 PM. Most seem to be on around 9. Usually, things are just starting to wind down at 10, so it's often a good time to pop in and say hi, when the others are all talked out.

(10:20:14 PM) InHisName: Some are gone by 9 or so.

(10:20:34 PM) kb3ui: I have another online meeting this week only, on Tuesday.

(10:21:00 PM) kb3ui: Interesting - maybe I should try to make it earlier.

(10:21:13 PM) rmg: yep

(10:21:32 PM) rmg: by now most of us are winding down

(10:21:59 PM) rmg: in some cases they are done early and head to bed

(10:22:08 PM) kb3ui: That's why it's a good time for me to get on and take over. Earlier, it's often tough to get in anything edgewise! :)

(10:22:18 PM) kb3ui: Not that I mind!

(10:23:16 PM) kb3ui: Nothing better than finding a lively discussion in full force going on here.

(10:24:21 PM) kb3ui: I have no problem in waiting until into August before we make a final decision on meeting that month.

(10:24:33 PM) kb3ui: It's still early.

(10:24:42 PM) kb3ui: July 28, the last I checked.

(10:25:16 PM) kb3ui: Vicious rumors circulating that in about an hour and a half they have plans to change it to July 29.

(10:25:48 PM) rmg: keep in mind we have to reserve a room

(10:26:12 PM) rmg: other sigs might meet at the same time

(10:26:35 PM) rmg: we can't wait too long

(10:26:43 PM) kb3ui: True, but I don't think there will be much call for one at that time of the summer. I doubt if more than a SIG or two will also be meeting, especially at a particular time.

(10:27:16 PM) kb3ui: Remember there are 3 rooms + big room available. Not like UM Library with just one usable room.

(10:27:28 PM) kb3ui: What do you think, Rich?

(10:27:30 PM) rmg: we may only have 3 rooms to use

(10:27:50 PM) InHisName: awwww only 3 roooms what to do with them ?

(10:27:55 PM) rmg: we might not be able to get the big room

(10:28:02 PM) InHisName: so?

(10:28:27 PM) rmg: if others get there first they get the rooms we don't

(10:28:29 PM) InHisName: The smaller ones hold over 20 each.

(10:28:33 PM) kb3ui: I don't think we want the big room. But there aren't going to be 3 SIGs meeting in August at the same time, I can assure you.

(10:28:56 PM) rmg: longer we wait the more likely that could happen

(10:29:02 PM) InHisName: Still need to reserve early to get word out etc.

(10:29:41 PM) rmg: remember, it's not just PACS that may want to meet

(10:29:53 PM) InHisName: If we wait til Thurs before sat, then no one will know that it is on. So no shows.

(10:30:00 PM) rmg: anyone can hold a meeting there

(10:30:08 PM) kb3ui: Randy, I recall that in previous years at UM Library, there were only 3 SIGs period that met at all during any month. I also doubt that other organizations, based on having seen the schedule posted, will meet on weekends during the summer.

(10:30:31 PM) rmg: just never know

(10:30:36 PM) kb3ui: Weekends are off times to begin with, and summers offer still.

(10:31:11 PM) rmg: but like Rich said, if we wait too long nobody will come

(10:31:13 PM) InHisName: Of the 6, how many said they might come to Aug meeting ?

(10:31:15 PM) kb3ui: If we get beaten to it, so be it - then our decision is made for us. But Rich is right about getting the word out if we do want to meet.

(10:31:41 PM) rmg: have to give people enough time to make plans

(10:31:49 PM) InHisName: We should reserve this week. Just to spread the word.

(10:31:59 PM) kb3ui: We can always meet at Upper Moreland Library if Giant fills up, remember, just a short walk away.

(10:32:17 PM) kb3ui: Upper Moreland never had any problem being available during the summer.

(10:33:13 PM) rmg: that still doesn't mean we can wait til the last second

(10:33:43 PM) rmg: either this week or next we need to reserve a room

(10:33:45 PM) kb3ui: I don't think Don would be very happy if we reserved the room and then no one showed up or we had to cancel. He said he was concerned about making a good splash at the very first time we met there, to show Giant and Abington Memorial Hospital that we're a group worth reckoning with.

(10:34:37 PM) kb3ui: His preference would be for us to wait until September for the entire club. However, others overruled him and got the meeting place opened for the summer.

(10:34:41 PM) InHisName: Didn't we have some SIG meet there in July ?

(10:35:10 PM) kb3ui: Yes, Ronn Homer's Hardware SIG, I believe. I think they're also planning on August. WE could meet on their tail end.

(10:35:21 PM) InHisName: yes

(10:36:05 PM) rmg: Ronn isn't meeting in Aug

(10:36:16 PM) rmg: he may come to ours

(10:36:35 PM) rmg: he sent me an email about it

(10:36:46 PM) kb3ui: No? Why not?

(10:37:08 PM) kb3ui: He said they would, last month.

(10:37:27 PM) rmg: he's going to school for SuSe

(10:37:30 PM) kb3ui: Probably disappointing turnout for July, maybe.

(10:37:45 PM) rmg: no, he had enough

(10:37:47 PM) kb3ui: If you know SuSe, like I know Suse..... Great for him!

(10:38:04 PM) InHisName: Or maybe by vote most may not wanted Aug.

(10:39:00 PM) kb3ui: Could be. If there's a meeting for us in August, I will come. But I won't get upset if the others want to wait until September.

(10:40:09 PM) kb3ui: Don got persuaded by the idea of having a warmup meeting to try out the meetingplace and find out the bugs before a regular big meeting. For example, does the Internet connection work? Stuff like that.

(10:41:25 PM) kb3ui: It would be great to get Ronn more active in our group. Ronn doesn't do anything half-way - he'd be a very productive asset.

(10:41:48 PM) InHisName: What do we want to do for Aug meeting ?

(10:41:58 PM) InHisName: Was that discussed earlier ?

(10:42:17 PM) rmg: no

(10:42:47 PM) kb3ui: Rich, it's really your decision, as SIG leader. If only 3 will show up, it's not going to be much of a meeting. But perhaps we should discuss this in earnest next week. Also, I could run a poll on Yahoo! Groups.

(10:43:19 PM) InHisName: We could all bring our linux / vbox boxes and check out settings for accessing the internet from the meeting rooms.

(10:43:33 PM) rmg: it might only be the 3 of us

(10:43:50 PM) rmg: seems Aug is a bad month for Jim

(10:43:50 PM) kb3ui: I'd like to do that. Mine should be working. As a matter of fact, I'm running from it now, and on wireless.

(10:43:53 PM) InHisName: The other 3 declined to hint that they might come ?

(10:44:21 PM) rmg: been there done that

(10:44:38 PM) rmg: I was at Ronn's sig in July

(10:44:58 PM) InHisName: did they do the connections thing then?

(10:45:14 PM) kb3ui: There's another issue - the conference center has to have someone open the place up. If other SIGs are meeting, then it's worthwhile. But if there's just 3 people for a couple of minutes, it might not look too good.

(10:45:46 PM) InHisName: couple of minutes, maybe a couple of hours

(10:46:03 PM) rmg: open browser, click on "login" and you are connected

(10:46:24 PM) kb3ui: login?

(10:46:52 PM) InHisName: Can we use "workgroups" to share things ? Has that been tried ?

(10:46:57 PM) rmg: painless

(10:46:57 PM) kb3ui: Do you get a special web page that requires you to log in before you can access the Internet? Have seen that at hotels.

(10:47:25 PM) kb3ui: Good point, Rich. Is there a LAN?

(10:47:28 PM) rmg: yep, it then takes you to the Giant home page

(10:47:46 PM) InHisName: I had to add "host interface networking" to vbox to get file shareing and workgroups to function.

(10:47:54 PM) kb3ui: We can bring our router, of course, and connect that to the Giant connection, maybe.

(10:48:25 PM) kb3ui: Thanks for mentioning that, Rich - I better experiment on my LAN first.

(10:48:36 PM) rmg: don't need it as long as wireless works on your laptop

(10:48:37 PM) InHisName: What if we all used wireless and tried to share too?

(10:49:31 PM) kb3ui: I think it would be more fun if we could get on a LAN. But we could do that with our own router, no?

(10:50:06 PM) kb3ui: At UMMS, we had a wireless router (belonged to Rich?) which was connected to an Ethernet connection of the school.

(10:50:25 PM) rmg: belonged to Norm

(10:50:37 PM) rmg: we don't need a router at Giant

(10:51:05 PM) kb3ui: Can we "see" each other, though? Or just the Internet?

(10:51:31 PM) rmg: no one tried any of that

(10:51:52 PM) kb3ui: I also wonder if the wireless upstairs is the one that can be picked up in the cafe downstairs. The whole store is supposed to be wireless enabled.

(10:52:02 PM) InHisName: how about that project then for Aug ?

(10:52:17 PM) kb3ui: Maybe different channels.

(10:52:34 PM) kb3ui: That's certainly possible.

(10:52:58 PM) kb3ui: We take an hour to get things working, anyway. So we could have a working project with that intention!

(10:53:02 PM) InHisName: I'd guess same network, multiple channels. Sharing could be done from any point. Test to prove it.

(10:53:05 PM) rmg: I can tell you that chat works from Giant

(10:53:32 PM) kb3ui: It would be great for PACS for us to test this, so they will know for September.

(10:53:58 PM) kb3ui: Chat uses GAIM which uses Internet? Yes, that would work if Internet works.

(10:54:09 PM) kb3ui: But local network, with shared folders, is different.

(10:54:14 PM) InHisName: We could put it into a doc file for everyones usage.

(10:54:57 PM) kb3ui: What could be interesting is to see if there's a way to get into the Giant LAN from outside. Like a firewall. That way, outsiders could be patched into PACS meetings.

(10:55:05 PM) InHisName: Section A - internet, B - sharing files. C - sharing printers.

(10:55:33 PM) InHisName: Hmm, remote logins.?

(10:55:58 PM) InHisName: Section D - remote logins.

(10:56:12 PM) kb3ui: Maybe. Or getting into the firewall. Or using a central DMZ like GotomyPC.

(10:56:44 PM) kb3ui: Section D would need information about their firewall, assuming they have one.

(10:57:28 PM) kb3ui: Why don't we run this all past the others next Monday and see who salutes it?

(10:58:01 PM) InHisName: Get reservation in this week than run this up the flag pole to see who salutes?

(10:58:15 PM) rmg: only if the others sign in next week

(10:58:45 PM) kb3ui: Or get salutes next Monday, then make reservation later next week.

(10:59:29 PM) kb3ui: I don't think we'd have a problem getting the room. If not at 1:15 PM, then an hour earlier or later.

(10:59:54 PM) kb3ui: Main thing, as you say, is to get the word around and the enthusiasm running.

(11:00:26 PM) kb3ui: If it isn't the most productive meeting, so what - it's summer!

(11:00:52 PM) kb3ui: There's food in the cafe. We can make lunch of it. Have some fun and get used to the facility.

(11:01:05 PM) rmg: why 1:15?

(11:01:35 PM) kb3ui: Senior moment - thought that was the time we met at UMMS. Whatever it was. Or could be!

(11:02:41 PM) rmg: we don't have to hold to that time in the summer

(11:03:02 PM) rmg: we will most likely have that time come Sept

(11:03:27 PM) kb3ui: You're absolutely right, Randy! But then we'll have to have another argument over what time to have the meeting. It could actually be anytime in August. Not even have to be the third Saturday.

(11:04:28 PM) InHisName: We could be meeting 7-10am instead ?

(11:05:11 PM) rmg: for Aug we should be able to pick the time

(11:05:55 PM) kb3ui: Very funny, Rich.

(11:05:59 PM) rmg: I would suggest a start time no earlier then 9 and no later then 12

(11:06:32 PM) kb3ui: I'd suggest high noon, and make it for lunch. Buy from the cafe and bring your food up.

(11:06:34 PM) InHisName: More resonable starting times than 7am.

(11:06:49 PM) kb3ui: Very funny, Rich.

(11:07:50 PM) kb3ui: Good question - what are the hours of the conference center. The store is open, I think, 24 hours. When I visited it on a weekend, I was able to get into the conference center, but some of the meeting rooms were locked.

(11:08:41 PM) kb3ui: If the store manager has a key, for example, I wonder if a meeting could be held at 2 AM.

(11:08:47 PM) kb3ui: Great time for Rich.

(11:09:30 PM) InHisName: yes, but what about geting a good attendance ? 2pm might be better for that ?

(11:10:12 PM) kb3ui: The conference center has a concierge, who staffs the front desk. But not there all the time, obviously.

(11:11:01 PM) kb3ui: Concierge comes free with the room reservation, normally. Concierge can also be paid by PACS to do extra work for PACS on a part-time basis, if needed.

(11:11:23 PM) kb3ui: One purpose of having a meeting would be to find out more about how the system works.

(11:12:30 PM) rmg: we need to come to several decisions

(11:12:38 PM) rmg: what day to meet

(11:12:44 PM) rmg: what time to meet

(11:13:00 PM) rmg: and what we want to accomplish

(11:14:13 PM) kb3ui: Third Saturday in August, unless there's a reason to meet other time. 1:15 PM, unless there's a reason to meet other time, like 12 noon. Not entirely important if we accomplish anything, as I see it, but we'll try our best.

(11:17:55 PM) kb3ui: I think that would be better, Rich.

(11:19:28 PM) kb3ui: Ok, I think we've accomplished a lot tonight. And that's in addition to what the guys did earlier tonight.

(11:19:56 PM) kb3ui: But, Randy, we do need to make this chat run earlier, so that you don't have to hang around all night. You have a good point!
