IRC Chat on Freenode.net/#pacslinux
(07:33:44 PM) Ronn [n=chatzill@c-71-58-183-203.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(07:34:22 PM) Ronn: hello randy
(07:34:50 PM) rmg: evening Ronn
(07:34:55 PM) Ronn: do u know when Jim fisher comes on?
(07:35:26 PM) rmg: I'm never sure if he is going to make it or not
(07:36:03 PM) Ronn: My dad is now doing a live video and audio stream of his talk show on the internet
(07:36:26 PM) rmg: sounds like fun
(07:37:19 PM) Ronn: It was a lot of work yesterday but ustream.tv helps out a lot. Starting next week he's doing shows on mon-wed-fri's
(07:37:50 PM) Ronn: i might show some of this at the SIG on Saturday
(07:38:43 PM) rmg: that should keep him busy
(07:39:26 PM) Ronn: I hope so. I start learning Linux next Thursday.
(07:39:51 PM) rmg: maybe by then Windows will have finished defragging
(07:40:13 PM) rmg: install it, then play with it
(07:40:44 PM) rmg: 27 hours of defrag so far
(07:41:59 PM) Ronn: I plan on installing it on the laptap after the SIG so I have something to play with. I'll probably get a new HD for the laptop so I can duel boot with more room
(07:42:20 PM) Ronn: question and linux applications
(07:42:32 PM) Ronn: do they all work on all flavors?
(07:42:54 PM) rmg: not always
(07:43:23 PM) rmg: I think it all depends on which distro you use
(07:44:30 PM) rmg: for example, if it's debian based, then the software should work on any distro that is debian based
(07:45:21 PM) rmg: with Ubuntu that's not much of a problem since it has a large repo
(07:45:43 PM) Ronn: I'll be working with OPEN SUSE . I'm not sure if it's ver 9 or the newest
(07:46:04 PM) rmg: just use one of the package managers to install all the software
(07:46:27 PM) rmg: don't know anything about it
(07:46:39 PM) rmg: never had any reason to use it
(07:47:15 PM) Ronn: The Linux plus certification is based around Novell's OPENSUSE
(07:48:20 PM) rmg: you should ask in one of the Ubuntu based chat rooms
(07:48:44 PM) rmg: there are more long time users in there
(07:49:03 PM) Ronn: i'll check them out
(07:49:07 PM) Ronn: thanks.
(07:49:17 PM) rmg: try #ubuntu-us-pa
(07:49:25 PM) Ronn: i better get back to studying for my network + cert.
(07:49:54 PM) rmg: I'll just sit here and wait to see if anyone else shows up
(07:49:57 PM) Ronn left the room (quit: "ChatZilla 0.9.83 [Firefox 3.0/2008052906]").
(07:53:58 PM) yoda_van [n=jim_fish@unaffiliated/jedijf] entered the room.
(07:54:11 PM) rmg: evening yoda_van
(07:55:15 PM) yoda_van: evening
(07:55:23 PM) yoda_van: was ronn here?
(07:55:31 PM) rmg: Ronn was looking for you
(07:55:38 PM) yoda_van: he just called but
(07:55:43 PM) yoda_van: let me check messages
(07:57:46 PM) yoda_van: ok - about his dad's show
(07:57:48 PM) yoda_van: cool
(07:58:41 PM) teddy-dbear [n=teddy-db@c-71-230-172-98.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(07:59:30 PM) rmg: he mentioned that in here
(08:03:04 PM) yoda_van: now using wicd on the apple iBook
(08:04:18 PM) rmg: still waiting for Windows to finish defragging
(08:04:33 PM) rmg: 28 hours and still going
(08:08:17 PM) yoda_van: that is ridiculous
(08:08:35 PM) rmg: that's Windows
(08:08:49 PM) rmg: 63%
(08:08:59 PM) yoda_van: makes me feel better about the auto fsck
(08:09:16 PM) yoda_van: even though every time it happens i think about changing it
(08:09:29 PM) teddy-dbear: now how am I going to go bowling?
(08:09:51 PM) yoda_van: if that's your only issue
(08:10:03 PM) yoda_van: you are in good shape
(08:10:15 PM) yoda_van: 9-12 saturday, right?
(08:10:37 PM) teddy-dbear: it's important to me!!!!
(08:10:45 PM) yoda_van: i may attend a windows sig - jeeze - hope noone has a camera
(08:11:26 PM) teddy-dbear: bring me treats and I won't tell :)
(08:11:32 PM) yoda_van: rmg51, is your el camino brown?
(08:11:39 PM) rmg: grey
(08:11:46 PM) yoda_van: darn
(08:11:49 PM) rmg: light grey
(08:11:59 PM) yoda_van: i though maybe you could ubuntu it up :D
(08:12:36 PM) yoda_van: i can't believe i got no response from pres about sfd - i hope spam filter ate it
(08:12:47 PM) rmg: come up with a plan and maybe it can happen
(08:13:21 PM) rmg: he might not be checking email over the summer
(08:13:29 PM) yoda_van: i think he should acknowledge the first email - without that i am assuming he's not interested
(08:14:16 PM) rmg: well, as a group we haven't done much planning
(08:14:28 PM) yoda_van: i am serious that we can go with linux wireless as a sig for sept - with hardy and wubi as sub topics
(08:14:46 PM) yoda_van: and software freedom in general
(08:15:02 PM) yoda_van: which is sort of kind of our theme always
(08:15:19 PM) rmg: or just spend the time getting Rich G's wireless to work
(08:15:28 PM) yoda_van: i am serious that we can go with linux wireless as a sig for sept - with hardy and wubi as sub topics
(08:15:59 PM) yoda_van: Rich may have thrown so much shit against the wall that he may have to start from scratch
(08:16:08 PM) rmg: as long as we have the right people there to lead it
(08:16:14 PM) rmg: hint, hint
(08:16:20 PM) InHisName [n=Administ@c-71-225-221-149.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(08:16:22 PM) yoda_van: that happens - i did the same thing all weekend
(08:16:38 PM) yoda_van: had to step back and try to undo everything
(08:16:46 PM) rmg: remember, I had it working at PACS
(08:16:58 PM) InHisName: it?
(08:17:00 PM) yoda_van: you know, when he says that
(08:17:09 PM) yoda_van: i know that everything is fine
(08:17:19 PM) yoda_van: its just a matter of the user
(08:17:44 PM) yoda_van: i think that i can offer no help outside of a face-to-face
(08:18:04 PM) rmg: bring Cindy, tell her to come "packing"
(08:18:11 PM) yoda_van: haha
(08:19:02 PM) yoda_van: i think go over setup - info gathering - drivers - command line and gui stuff will help a lot of people
(08:19:23 PM) yoda_van: it translates to all devices,
(08:19:47 PM) teddy-dbear: and a swift kick in the butt wouldn't hurt
(08:20:21 PM) yoda_van: you know i think that often, then i relax and say everyone doesn't have the hacker/tinkerer spirit
(08:20:49 PM) InHisName: Seems to be a tiny bit crude for software freedom day planning?
(08:21:05 PM) yoda_van: and just want it to work - but, even with that you have to be willing to invest the time to learn also
(08:21:11 PM) InHisName: or are you two on something completly different?
(08:21:25 PM) yoda_van: InHisName,
(08:21:38 PM) yoda_van: i am serious that we can go with linux wireless as a sig for sept - with hardy and wubi as sub topics
(08:21:57 PM) InHisName: velly interrrrresting.
(08:22:10 PM) yoda_van: and software freedom in general
(08:22:32 PM) yoda_van: which is sort of kind of our theme always
(08:22:46 PM) InHisName: We are getting pretty long in the tooth with our current methods etc.
(08:22:49 PM) rmg: that would mean no setting up and handing out disks
(08:23:19 PM) yoda_van: rmg51, i think that's always part of it
(08:23:28 PM) InHisName: Do a dry run in Aug ?
(08:23:44 PM) rmg: last year we didn't hold our SIG
(08:23:57 PM) yoda_van: on wireless setups - config - info gathering - driver installing
(08:24:33 PM) yoda_van: i would be better set for september
(08:24:58 PM) yoda_van: i have all the problem hardware that i use working - right now the dreaded broadcom
(08:25:05 PM) yoda_van: on the toshiba atheros
(08:25:28 PM) yoda_van: and by then (hopefully) wireless broadband pcmcia on linux
(08:25:46 PM) rmg: I can always let you take a crack at my external install
(08:26:38 PM) yoda_van: i need you for the gui hardware stuff
(08:26:57 PM) yoda_van: do you still have a gutsy install?
(08:26:57 PM) InHisName: Not A or B or G or N but broadband, like the verizon pmcia wireless card with expensive subscriptions ?
(08:27:05 PM) yoda_van: InHisName, yeppers
(08:27:10 PM) teddy-dbear: I'll help in any wau I can
(08:27:12 PM) InHisName: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
(08:27:31 PM) yoda_van: $60.00 per month i pay - invaluable for me
(08:27:59 PM) rmg: I'm still running Gutsy on this laptop
(08:28:00 PM) InHisName: Cause you work from the van more that half your life ?
(08:28:02 PM) yoda_van: i use roughly $2000.00 a month worth of 'metered' data so its cheap
(08:28:16 PM) yoda_van: InHisName, 1/3
(08:28:38 PM) yoda_van: 1/2 office
(08:28:42 PM) yoda_van: 1/6 home
(08:29:22 PM) InHisName: Oh, my bad, 12 at office and 8 on the road. and 4 home ?
(08:29:39 PM) yoda_van: actually its not that bad
(08:29:41 PM) InHisName: fills up the day!
(08:29:50 PM) yoda_van: 7 at home on average
(08:30:10 PM) yoda_van: the other 17 combo - office / road -- it's a blur
(08:31:09 PM) yoda_van: rmg51, you never answered - is sat 9 to 12?
(08:31:16 PM) rmg: yep
(08:31:38 PM) yoda_van: depending on how my training goes - i may make all or part of it
(08:31:52 PM) rmg: and Hatboro car show on the 26th
(08:31:59 PM) yoda_van: depending on how windowsy it is also ;)
(08:32:23 PM) yoda_van: you liked that last year huh
(08:32:48 PM) rmg: come Sept you'll need something to occupy your time
(08:32:51 PM) rocker68 [n=chris@d-65-175-229-7.cpe.metrocast.net] entered the room.
(08:33:01 PM) InHisName: howdy rocker68
(08:33:09 PM) rocker68: yo guys
(08:33:13 PM) rmg: I usually go every year
(08:33:22 PM) rmg: long time no see
(08:33:24 PM) yoda_van: dude
(08:33:30 PM) rocker68: yep
(08:33:41 PM) yoda_van: come shopping in pa in sept :D
(08:33:46 PM) rocker68: had a lil spare time figured I would drop in to say hello
(08:34:16 PM) rmg: PACS just put you out of a job
(08:34:21 PM) rocker68: why shopping in sept?
(08:34:33 PM) rmg: PACS moved
(08:34:34 PM) yoda_van: pacs is moving to giant supermarket
(08:34:44 PM) rocker68: yeah I know all about it
(08:34:47 PM) yoda_van: err, has moved
(08:34:52 PM) rocker68: sounds like a real nice building
(08:35:09 PM) rocker68: I think some of the sigs are going to have an issue with space
(08:35:12 PM) InHisName: it is, former Home Depot of Willow grove
(08:35:31 PM) rmg: no more setting up routers
(08:36:07 PM) rmg: we will find out in Sept
(08:36:17 PM) rocker68: yeah they have wireless and projectors
(08:36:21 PM) rmg: the rooms seem big enough
(08:36:35 PM) InHisName: 26 cap for the smaller rooms.
(08:36:37 PM) rmg: just not enough rooms
(08:36:40 PM) rocker68: I talked to Ben earlier today
(08:37:04 PM) InHisName: any news ?
(08:37:05 PM) rocker68: he is excited about going to MIT
(08:37:15 PM) InHisName: I kinda figured.
(08:37:20 PM) yoda_van: haven't heard from him since may/june
(08:37:24 PM) rocker68: any news on what?
(08:37:30 PM) InHisName: Ben
(08:38:51 PM) rocker68: how are things going there?
(08:38:54 PM) rocker68: slow?
(08:39:49 PM) rmg: very slow 64%
(08:40:36 PM) rocker68: has kevin been around?
(08:40:58 PM) rmg: he doesn't usually hang out in here
(08:41:05 PM) rocker68: what about the NTProfit laptops?
(08:41:06 PM) InHisName: July is 1/2 over already and I still don't have my vbox clients into shareing file folders and printers with normal XP in the family workgroup.
(08:41:15 PM) rocker68: not sure I named it correctly
(08:41:21 PM) rmg: mostly in the loco room
(08:41:37 PM) InHisName: #ubuntu-us-pa
(08:42:02 PM) rmg: laptop project is almost over
(08:42:11 PM) yoda_van: http://www.myfisher.org/ntrlaptops
(08:42:18 PM) rmg: just have to put them out for sale
(08:42:41 PM) yoda_van: rmg51's gonna enter them into the database
(08:43:11 PM) rmg: if Kevin hasn't already finished
(08:43:46 PM) yoda_van: i don't know - he was there recently i think
(08:44:09 PM) rmg: second home
(08:44:23 PM) InHisName: kev still mentions it between many zoe pictures.
(08:44:32 PM) rmg: have you seen how they are fixing the place up?
(08:44:39 PM) yoda_van: yep
(08:44:42 PM) InHisName: not lately
(08:45:24 PM) rmg: slowly starting to look like someplace you'd like to visit
(08:45:54 PM) yoda_van: i liked it the way it was
(08:46:25 PM) yoda_van: until i see otherwise, i think they are putting earrings on a pig as they say
(08:47:04 PM) rmg: maybe by the time they are done you will be able to find things
(08:47:11 PM) yoda_van: that's no fun
(08:47:20 PM) rmg: probable not
(08:47:23 PM) yoda_van: lokking for stuff you find even neater stuff
(08:48:00 PM) rmg: except when you need power cords to go with laptops
(08:48:32 PM) yoda_van: yeah, that sucks
(08:48:55 PM) yoda_van: larry was pissed that last monday when we put him to work :D
(08:49:06 PM) rmg: the laptop room was the next in line
(08:49:28 PM) yoda_van: that's why we sorted the good stuff and just left the rest
(08:50:01 PM) yoda_van: we had 19'ish that we kept - all had power cords - god knows where they are now
(08:50:03 PM) rmg: sorting through all the bins?
(08:50:20 PM) yoda_van: all the stuff on the wall is gone or going
(08:50:32 PM) InHisName: Sold maybe ?
(08:50:37 PM) yoda_van: our stuff is on the rack in the back right corner in bread boxes
(08:50:41 PM) rmg: mostly junk anyway
(08:50:51 PM) yoda_van: yep
(08:50:57 PM) yoda_van: except the bread box stuff
(08:51:26 PM) InHisName: like those bread boxes do we, yoda_van ?
(08:51:36 PM) yoda_van: 14 or 15 completed and like 5 more in case some new people wanted to play
(08:51:37 PM) rich2506_ [n=rich2506@c-68-42-25-141.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(08:51:40 PM) rmg: as long as Norm is there to stop anyone from trashing them
(08:51:53 PM) rich2506_: wuzzup y'all?
(08:51:55 PM) InHisName: howdy, rich2506_
(08:52:06 PM) InHisName: July is 1/2 over already and I still don't have my vbox clients into shareing file folders and printers with normal XP in the family workgroup.
(08:52:07 PM) yoda_van: chuck was supposed to watch them - that's his room now - ebay sales
(08:52:43 PM) rmg: I find out in 2 weeks
(08:53:06 PM) InHisName: NTR is doing ebay now ?
(08:53:14 PM) rmg: I just can't stay late if I want to get to the car show
(08:53:26 PM) yoda_van: yeah - that's something else we can promote at sfd - $100 laptops to play with
(08:53:38 PM) yoda_van: InHisName, always has
(08:53:43 PM) rich2506_: i finally got the cds to reinstall windows on my desktop, now its deteriorated so far that the cd player doesn't work anymore
(08:53:44 PM) InHisName: yoda_van, but the 26th is NOT a 3rd sat.
(08:54:05 PM) rmg: \maybe we should have few on hand
(08:54:27 PM) yoda_van: rmg51, i was thinking the same thing
(08:54:47 PM) InHisName: NTR has low demand from Philly residents ? Too much supply ?
(08:54:56 PM) yoda_van: and some brochures
(08:55:16 PM) rmg: not that many people know about it
(08:55:34 PM) yoda_van: and the prices are a little high i think also
(08:55:35 PM) rmg: or at least I don't think they do
(08:56:50 PM) InHisName: keven just popped into the local
(08:56:57 PM) rich2506_: so a reasonable laptop price would be?
(09:01:41 PM) rich2506_: so what's the other forum that everybody's on?
(09:04:45 PM) InHisName: #ubuntu-us-pa
(09:07:32 PM) rich2506_: kewl
(09:09:36 PM) rich2506_ left the room (quit: "Ex-Chat").
(09:10:32 PM) rich2506_ [n=rich2506@c-68-42-25-141.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(09:13:25 PM) InHisName: welcome back rich2506_
(09:15:32 PM) rich2506_: thank ye
(09:16:14 PM) rich2506_: well, i tried going back to linuxwireless and followed the instructions
(09:16:35 PM) rich2506_: appeared to work, but still can't on that way
(09:17:01 PM) InHisName: keep trying. I don't have wireless yet.
(09:18:31 PM) rich2506_: really? that bites
(09:23:00 PM) InHisName: I'm happy so far....
(09:23:53 PM) rich2506_: yeah, i mean i can get on line, but i can't take the laptop anywhere unless i just download material to read
(09:24:53 PM) rich2506_: if you're on a train ride, that's cool, but if you'r downtown at a coffee shop, pfft!
(09:25:57 PM) InHisName: these guys are discussing the Verizon Broadband wireless. The mucho $$$$ not the G or N 30 foot stuff.
(09:28:15 PM) rich2506_: ah
(09:58:09 PM) yoda_van left the room (quit: "Time to make the donuts.").
(10:00:55 PM) rmg: well, at least there was a lively discussion in the loco room
(10:01:10 PM) InHisName: Started here first
(10:03:29 PM) rich2506_ left the room (quit: "Ex-Chat").
(10:07:45 PM) rmg: looks like we died in here
(10:08:09 PM) rmg: may as well call it a night
(10:08:29 PM) rocker68 left the room.
(10:08:33 PM) InHisName: OK, then it is a NIGHT.
(10:08:52 PM) rmg: that's what I said
(10:11:44 PM) rmg: 30 hours to defrag XP
(10:11:59 PM) rmg: finally done
