(08:29:04 PM) rmg: 4 am drive time
(08:29:46 PM) rmg: he hasn't been in chat for the last couple days
(08:29:57 PM) rmg: not even from the road
(08:30:51 PM) InHisName: Shooting for the good driver award of the year ?

(08:34:31 PM) rmg: he started a new route in Delaware
(08:35:18 PM) InHisName: A new route in MD wuld meen even more time away from us.
(08:35:51 PM) InHisName: We goota file with divorce court to put a stop to this progression right away!
(08:36:14 PM) rmg: chat has been dead many times recently
(08:36:35 PM) rmg: not that big a deal
(08:37:04 PM) rmg: still need warm bodies to have a chat
(08:37:25 PM) rmg: just not enough of those in here right now
(08:37:42 PM) rmg: don't count the bears
(08:42:25 PM) InHisName: have to count the bears. They type stuff, thats more than trippingmonkey has done so far....
(08:43:13 PM) rmg: the bears say more the he usually does
(08:43:15 PM) InHisName: Then all the rest of the mentioned names haven't even botherd to log in at all !!
(08:43:40 PM) rmg: just the other Rich
(08:43:59 PM) rmg: but he left right before you came in
(08:44:15 PM) rmg: no one else has been here yet
(08:44:21 PM) Jfrost [n=root@h-66-167-56-111.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.
(08:44:32 PM) InHisName: izzat the fella that move to new hampshire ?
(08:44:38 PM) rmg: no
(08:44:47 PM) InHisName: hey there ben !
(08:45:34 PM) Jfrost: hello hello
(08:46:14 PM) InHisName: Ben, can I tell from a linux router what IP was using the internet at what times of a day?
(08:46:34 PM) Jfrost: what do you mean linux router
(08:46:50 PM) Jfrost: almost always yes if you enable logging
(08:46:58 PM) InHisName: I have a box running astlinux. Includes a router.
(08:47:03 PM) Jfrost: dunno
(08:47:04 PM) Jfrost: probably
(08:47:17 PM) Jfrost: wait actually yes
(08:47:38 PM) InHisName: how do I query the activity on a particular day ?
(08:47:39 PM) Jfrost: set up an iptable rule for log and script it to start at 8 am
(08:48:14 PM) InHisName: oh, then I may not have done that yet, so no log to query ?
(08:50:06 PM) kb3ui [n=ubuntu@h-66-167-91-168.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.
(08:50:50 PM) InHisName: Hi russ! speak of the devil just a few minutes ago!
(08:51:02 PM) kb3ui: What did the devil say?
(08:51:11 PM) kb3ui: Or, what was spoken of the devil?
(08:51:16 PM) InHisName: where's russ
(08:51:30 PM) kb3ui: Russ' computer is back in operation!
(08:51:40 PM) InHisName: yea, russ
(08:51:42 PM) kb3ui: Had problem with Internet access.
(08:52:01 PM) InHisName: forgot to pay comcast ?
(08:52:05 PM) kb3ui: Hope no one tried to make it to February's meeting.
(08:52:48 PM) kb3ui: No, some setting got hosed for access to my LAN. And it's Earthlink.
(08:53:14 PM) InHisName: Dialup:?
(08:53:20 PM) kb3ui: DSL.
(08:53:27 PM) InHisName: How much ?
(08:53:35 PM) kb3ui: $35/month.
(08:53:59 PM) InHisName: Same limit as verizon (18,00 feet from verizon)
(08:54:05 PM) InHisName: ??
(08:54:17 PM) kb3ui: Big problem with these carriers is that they give great deals to new customers, but forget their older ones.
(08:54:20 PM) InHisName: speed ul/dl ?
(08:55:17 PM) kb3ui: Probably yes, as it's using the same lines. Not sure what speed I'm paying for, but you can get any speed within reason.
(08:55:32 PM) kb3ui: 1.5 MB Download for example.
(08:55:40 PM) kb3ui: 1.5 MBaud.
(08:56:23 PM) kb3ui: They were charging me $45/mo. until I brought it to their attention that new subscribers get $19/mo for 6 months, and then $35/mo thereafter.
(08:56:32 PM) kb3ui: They agreed to lower the price to $35/mo.
(08:56:57 PM) InHisName: Good for you, Russ
(08:57:10 PM) InHisName: I need to do same with comcast.
(08:57:15 PM) kb3ui: I hear great things about Verizon's FIOS service.
(08:57:50 PM) kb3ui: You just mention that Earthlink is offering you $18.95/month for 6 months, and see what they will do!
(08:57:55 PM) InHisName: $43 mo for 6/2 mbits
(08:58:14 PM) kb3ui: Nothing to lose! Do you need all that speed for what you're doing, Rich?
(08:58:17 PM) InHisName: and $13 for broadcast TV only.
(08:58:35 PM) InHisName: I got 0.384 Mbuts u/l
(08:59:21 PM) InHisName: Kinda slows to as low as 0.060 mbits with neighbor hood sharing.
(09:00:22 PM) InHisName: What are the bears up to? Gorging them selves on chocolate ?
(09:00:27 PM) kb3ui: I find that that the local loop to the ISP is the least of the problems regarding access speed - find that most of the delays occur on the server on the other side or in the backbone of the Internet. Gets worse when the kids get home from school.
(09:00:38 PM) kb3ui: Bears like honey, not chocolate.
(09:01:16 PM) kb3ui: Randy likes chocolate.
(09:01:18 PM) InHisName: Normal bears that can't type and chat do. These bears seem to be choco-holics
(09:01:35 PM) kb3ui: What a coincidence! So is Randy!
(09:01:59 PM) InHisName: Now, if they were only chocolate bears!
(09:02:22 PM) kb3ui: They wouldn't last very long, then, with Randy around!
(09:02:25 PM) teddy-dbear: we'er the chocoholics around here
(09:03:01 PM) teddy-dbear: I share my stash with all my friends!!!!!
(09:03:09 PM) kb3ui: Just don't eat Randy. He doesn't taste very good.
(09:03:30 PM) InHisName: bear with me, guys while I have some family time before bed time.
(09:03:33 PM) teddy-dbear: didn't know you tried
(09:03:44 PM) kb3ui: Go ahead, Rich.
(09:04:23 PM) kb3ui: Not human eater. Bears aren't either - they are vegetarians, I think.
(09:04:34 PM) kb3ui: cacao beans.
(09:04:42 PM) kb3ui: processed cacoa beans.
(09:04:48 PM) teddy-dbear: junk food junkies
(09:05:31 PM) burke-bear: cookies and cake and alway chocolate
(09:05:36 PM) kb3ui: I wanted to welcome trippingmonkey to our chat, as well. Not sure I've had the pleasure!
(09:06:00 PM) rmg: he's not here right now
(09:06:01 PM) kb3ui: Hershey processed cacoa beans.
(09:06:06 PM) rmg: he's away
(09:06:21 PM) kb3ui: Ok. Thanks.
(09:06:54 PM) kb3ui: Good evening to Ben (jfrost), if he's around.
(09:06:55 PM) rmg: he's just lurking in this room
(09:07:00 PM) Jfrost: i be around
(09:07:15 PM) Jfrost: well i'm writing a paper of valentino achak deng
(09:07:24 PM) Jfrost: so yes i am a bit of a lurker at the moment
(09:07:32 PM) kb3ui: Valentino Achak Deng? For Chinese history?
(09:08:25 PM) kb3ui: Real quick - it's been a while since I've been in contact with you, Ben - anything on college admissions for next year?
(09:08:45 PM) Jfrost: got into schreyers which i'm really excited about
(09:09:00 PM) kb3ui: Not familiar with that school - where is it?
(09:09:04 PM) Jfrost: and i got another oppertunity which i need to discuss with people in my sig fairly soon
(09:09:08 PM) kb3ui: Oh - Penn State
(09:09:11 PM) Jfrost: its the honors college at penn state
(09:09:13 PM) kb3ui: Honors College. Great!
(09:09:24 PM) kb3ui: Congratulations!
(09:09:28 PM) Jfrost: thank ya
(09:09:34 PM) Jfrost: waiting to hear back from a bunch more
(09:09:52 PM) kb3ui: It's a bit early. Hard to put up with all the waiting, though.
(09:10:14 PM) Jfrost: valentino achak deng, is a guy who is a sudanese refugee
(09:10:26 PM) rmg: save the discussion for late in the sig
(09:10:30 PM) Jfrost: and they wrote a book about him called, "what is the what" for the one book one philadelphia proect
(09:10:49 PM) Jfrost: which is a great novel
(09:10:51 PM) rmg: Jim might not make it til sometime around 9
(09:11:00 PM) Jfrost: sounds good
(09:11:03 PM) kb3ui: Oh yes - I'm familiar with that. Please get back to your work and return to your lurking, Ben!
(09:11:22 PM) Jfrost: or well not to good but better than not showing up like i've done
(09:11:50 PM) rmg: early road calls
(09:11:54 PM) kb3ui: Fine with us! Always good to hear from you, lurking or otherwise!
(09:11:55 PM) rmg: 4 am
(09:12:13 PM) kb3ui: For you, Randy, or jim?
(09:12:23 PM) rmg: has to make one of those on Sats
(09:12:26 PM) rmg: Jim
(09:12:46 PM) kb3ui: Jim must be up 24 hours a day.
(09:13:18 PM) rmg: just seems that way
(09:17:59 PM) Jfrost: ah sleep is a great thing when you can get it
(09:18:39 PM) rmg: I'd like to get some now
(09:19:39 PM) kb3ui: High School students don't know what sleep is.
(09:20:09 PM) kb3ui: Too many of them get too little of it, and goodness knows they need more of it.
(09:20:54 PM) kb3ui: Everyone seems to be sleep deprived these days, and it isn't a good trend.
(09:26:57 PM) ***rmg is falling asleep at the keyboard
(09:28:03 PM) kb3ui: Everyone seems to be sleep deprived these days, and it isn't a good trend.
(09:33:31 PM) kb3ui: EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE SLEEP DEPRIVED THESE DAYS, AND IT ISN'T A GOOD TREND!!!!
(09:35:11 PM) InHisName: I am back briefly
(09:35:58 PM) kb3ui: EVERYONE SEEMS TO BE SLEEP DEPRIVED THESE DAYS, AND IT ISN'T A GOOD TREND!!!!
(09:36:29 PM) InHisName: you are repeating your self, have you fallen asleep ?
(09:36:47 PM) kb3ui: No, but everyone else has!
(09:37:26 PM) InHisName: trippingmonkey, seems to be the only grey one around here so far.
(09:46:36 PM) ***trippingmonkey rubs the sleep out of his eyes
(09:53:34 PM) InHisName: and.... trippingmonkey still is greyed out.
(09:53:39 PM) InHisName: Rub harder
(09:53:55 PM) InHisName: kb3ui, is grey too, now.
(09:54:07 PM) InHisName: Ben are you still here ?
(09:54:30 PM) InHisName: Jfrost, or rather that then ben ?
(09:54:36 PM) Jfrost: yup
(09:54:38 PM) kb3ui: Yes, my hair has been grey for the last 10 years, Rich.
(09:55:05 PM) InHisName: youre typing and name is still grey on my screen
(09:55:15 PM) InHisName: oohps not any more
(09:55:28 PM) InHisName: trippingmonkey, is black too.
(09:55:47 PM) trippingmonkey: my apologies
(09:56:05 PM) InHisName: Jfrost, how do it set the log to go in iptables ?
(09:56:19 PM) InHisName: I got a Putty open to it.
(09:56:58 PM) Jfrost: http://lists.netfilter.org/pipermail/netfilter-devel/2005-May/019529.html
(09:57:03 PM) InHisName: I probably want to put it into a conf file somewhere.
(09:57:34 PM) InHisName: I'm off to read some for a while
(09:57:54 PM) Jfrost: sounds good
(10:00:44 PM) kb3ui: No problem, trippingmonkey - we all drift in and out here, often multi-tasking.
(10:02:39 PM) InHisName: trippingmonkey, is "George". Have I met you in person. "the SIG leader"
(10:04:25 PM) InHisName: LOGDROP isn't quite what I had in mind.
(10:04:42 PM) trippingmonkey: nope
(10:05:21 PM) InHisName: I want to log when an IP starts to use the internet for 1st time in last "X" minutes. Like 15 or even 60 or what ever.
(10:06:06 PM) InHisName: Then I am glad to meet you for 1st time then!
(10:07:08 PM) trippingmonkey: As am I! A night of firsts.
(10:07:35 PM) InHisName: Better'n a night of fists!
(10:08:09 PM) InHisName: Amazing what a missing "r" can do!
(10:08:40 PM) kb3ui: Yes. My name is ussel.
(10:09:00 PM) trippingmonkey: geoge?
(10:09:19 PM) kb3ui: InHisName's name is "ich".
(10:09:35 PM) InHisName: or maybe ichad
(10:10:01 PM) kb3ui: His eal name is ichad, but we call him ich.
(10:10:14 PM) kb3ui: rmg51 is andy.
(10:10:36 PM) kb3ui: So is teddy-dbea and buke-bea.
(10:10:48 PM) kb3ui: all same peson.
(10:10:49 PM) InHisName: He has stuffed animals: bea
(10:11:32 PM) kb3ui: jfost is Ben, a high-school student very active in PACS.
(10:12:23 PM) InHisName: kb3ui, you left two "r"s in that one!
(10:12:34 PM) kb3ui: andy, say hello to geoge..
(10:13:14 PM) kb3ui: Soy! should be vey active in PACS.
(10:14:05 PM) InHisName: We could wander back to linux topics ?
(10:14:20 PM) kb3ui: Bette than linux tropics.
(10:15:02 PM) InHisName: Not really, I like the tropics expecially when weather is over 90+
(10:15:23 PM) InHisName: I can thaw out of this cold stuff.
(10:15:31 PM) kb3ui: trippingmonkey, if you right click on the names under "8 people in room" and then left click on a name, Info gives you the real name which is helpful in keeping the cast of characters straight.
(10:15:52 PM) kb3ui: Rich, I'm going to Florida next week - Clearwater.
(10:16:07 PM) InHisName: Pffaw on you, kb3ui
(10:16:23 PM) kb3ui: I know it's your old state.
(10:16:48 PM) ***trippingmonkey figured that out many moons ago
(10:17:13 PM) kb3ui: Sounds as if trippingmonkey knows his way around. Great!
(10:17:29 PM) trippingmonkey: i try
(10:18:11 PM) kb3ui: We've got a great group, here. Most of the time we talk about Linux, but we tend to get off-topic quite easily.
(10:18:44 PM) trippingmonkey: i've come in a couple of times this week, but nobody was here
(10:18:46 PM) InHisName: It is getting ON topic that takes a major movement.
(10:18:52 PM) trippingmonkey: well, except for chanserv
(10:19:01 PM) kb3ui: We usually meet here on Monday evenings, from 8 PM on.
(10:19:03 PM) InHisName: Mondays we meet from 8 to ???
(10:19:26 PM) kb3ui: ChanServe appears to be a robot - not sure what it is looking for here.
(10:19:53 PM) InHisName: Once a month meetings is too infrequent to discuss ideas etc.
(10:19:55 PM) kb3ui: ChanServe says even less than teddy-dbear and burke-bear, and they are stuffed!
(10:20:10 PM) InHisName: So we came up with weekly ones with NO driveing.
(10:20:33 PM) kb3ui: driving. or is it diving?
(10:20:55 PM) trippingmonkey: clearly its driveing
(10:21:10 PM) InHisName: that's clear ?
(10:21:15 PM) trippingmonkey: quite clear
(10:21:17 PM) InHisName: or maybe cleare
(10:22:08 PM) kb3ui: Lots of people very knowledgeable about Linux, and very generous with their time and skills to help. Then there is me.
(10:22:51 PM) InHisName: Then there is Jfrost who can help the knowlegable answer the tough questions.
(10:23:05 PM) kb3ui: Face-to-face meetings are normally 3rd Saturdays.
(10:23:17 PM) Jfrost: and we're always willing to help face to face
(10:23:25 PM) trippingmonkey: where at?
(10:23:43 PM) InHisName: Upper Moreland Middle school
(10:23:49 PM) Jfrost: InHisName, for logging things you can just check the first and last occurence of the log
(10:23:50 PM) kb3ui: Great time for demonstrations and stuff that doesn't lend itself to typing.
(10:24:10 PM) Jfrost: as well as people actually being there to go question answer
(10:24:21 PM) Jfrost: no distractions and you can meet and deal with smar tpeopel
(10:24:54 PM) InHisName: Orangmens bulevard & fooey forgot that road name. Just east of Hatboro
(10:25:03 PM) kb3ui: http://www.pacsnet.org
(10:25:21 PM) InHisName: There is a map there, right ?
(10:25:24 PM) kb3ui: Byberry Rd.
(10:25:31 PM) InHisName: That s the road.
(10:25:47 PM) InHisName: or is it Bybey
(10:26:05 PM) kb3ui: I was just going to say that, but thought better of it. You apparently did not.
(10:26:05 PM) trippingmonkey: byberry
(10:26:57 PM) InHisName: a double "RR" too ripe for the plucking.
(10:27:51 PM) kb3ui: http://pacslinux.yahoogroups.com is where our Yahoo! group meets. We also have a wiki. There's a link to all of this in the http://www.pacsnet.org. We're listed under "Sigs(Special Interest Groups)".
(10:28:30 PM) kb3ui: You may already have this information, George, since you found us here tonight.
(10:28:42 PM) InHisName: trippingmonkey, so how did you discover us in the first place ?
(10:28:51 PM) trippingmonkey: not the yahoo group
(10:29:06 PM) trippingmonkey: checking out what other channels people were in
(10:29:25 PM) InHisName: the spy technique then.
(10:29:29 PM) kb3ui: The Yahoo! group has reminders of chats and meetings, plus postings of general interest.
(10:29:29 PM) trippingmonkey: i'm originally from around here, but i've been at college for the past 4 years
(10:29:35 PM) trippingmonkey: trying to get back into things
(10:29:38 PM) InHisName: learn a lot of things that way
(10:29:44 PM) kb3ui: We should say we're in Philadelphia, PA.
(10:30:10 PM) InHisName: and burbs
(10:31:37 PM) Jfrost: where you go to college trippingmonkey ?
(10:31:51 PM) InHisName: Jfrost, I want to log when an IP starts to use the internet for 1st time in last "X" minutes. Like 15 or even 60 or what ever.
(10:31:54 PM) kb3ui: One advantage of the chat is that it moves along at slow enough pace that you can be going in and out without anyone probably noticing. We all do it.
(10:32:11 PM) Jfrost: use bash to clean the log
(10:32:21 PM) trippingmonkey: boston university
(10:32:31 PM) InHisName: Jfrost, y not vi ?
(10:32:44 PM) Jfrost: because vi isn't a scripting language
(10:32:45 PM) Jfrost: bash is
(10:33:00 PM) InHisName: what about ksh ?
(10:33:09 PM) trippingmonkey: or sh
(10:33:32 PM) trippingmonkey: or python
(10:33:50 PM) InHisName: sed uses scripts, but not a shell though.
(10:34:39 PM) InHisName: Jfrost, meaning to clean out every 60 minutes ?
(10:34:58 PM) Jfrost: or ust check timestamps
(10:35:05 PM) Jfrost: since its like 10 lines in bash
(10:35:12 PM) Jfrost: in sh its gonna be around 25
(10:35:17 PM) Jfrost: in python about 40
(10:35:34 PM) InHisName: Jfrost, say 1.2.3.4 accesses internet for 1st time today. Logit.
(10:35:51 PM) InHisName: Say they access again 2 hrs later. logit.
(10:36:30 PM) InHisName: Say access every 30 seconds. log only first access and no more until 60 min gap in accesses.
(10:36:31 PM) Jfrost: ah thats a pain unless your running a full fledged firewall
(10:36:43 PM) Jfrost: ah so you want
(10:36:50 PM) Jfrost: at 60 if their still on
(10:36:56 PM) InHisName: iptables is NOT full fledged fire wall ?
(10:37:06 PM) Jfrost: it is
(10:37:12 PM) Jfrost: but you want one with a bit more
(10:37:22 PM) Jfrost: built in scripts
(10:37:30 PM) Jfrost: everything is built off of iptables
(10:37:41 PM) Jfrost: but a lot of the firewalls come with a huge set of scripts to make life easeir
(10:37:58 PM) InHisName: How about "borrowed" scripts to paste into a conf file. ? Jfrost
(10:38:48 PM) InHisName: My disk is 44 MB CF disk. So not gobs of space. NO graphics. All black screen text.
(10:38:56 PM) Jfrost: oh fun
(10:39:07 PM) Jfrost: i run all ipcop
(10:39:09 PM) InHisName: So, I have iptables
(10:39:20 PM) Jfrost: / devil
(10:39:30 PM) Jfrost: devil is like 35 megs
(10:39:54 PM) Jfrost: wait nvm
(10:39:54 PM) Jfrost: new release is 51 i apologize
(10:39:54 PM) InHisName: I got 2.4 Megs free
(10:41:00 PM) Jfrost: talk tommorrow when i have a night to knock out writing random scirpts
(10:41:09 PM) InHisName: Although I do have a 1/2 Gig mem stick in the USB port.
(10:41:32 PM) InHisName: Better Idea, thanks Jfrost
(10:41:41 PM) Jfrost: haha
(10:41:44 PM) Jfrost: sounds good
(10:42:06 PM) InHisName: I should be in and out randomly tomorrow after 7pm
(10:44:29 PM) InHisName: would a "iptables --list " be useful to post ot pastebin ?
(10:44:37 PM) InHisName: to
(10:45:49 PM) Jfrost: not at them moment
(10:45:54 PM) Jfrost: i need to do hw
(10:45:56 PM) Jfrost: peace
(10:45:59 PM) Jfrost left the room (quit: "Leaving").
(10:46:05 PM) InHisName: We'll just start tomorrow
(10:47:08 PM) InHisName: trippingmonkey, do you use linux? occasionally , daily, or not yet ?
(10:47:52 PM) InHisName: kb3ui, you've been quiet for a bit.
(10:48:01 PM) trippingmonkey: yes, ubuntu
(10:48:09 PM) trippingmonkey: exclusively
(10:48:35 PM) trippingmonkey: have been for about 3 years
(10:48:42 PM) InHisName: does that make you an expert ?
(10:48:48 PM) trippingmonkey: no, just comfortable
(10:49:09 PM) kb3ui: Compared with many, he does. We're currently working with Ubuntu in this group.
(10:50:02 PM) trippingmonkey: i like ubuntu, but i still have a love for slackware
(10:50:14 PM) InHisName: Have you dabbled in to the iptables stuff ?
(10:50:20 PM) trippingmonkey: not for a while
(10:50:56 PM) InHisName: Do you bother with having multi boot [ubuntu, slackware, etc ?]
(10:51:08 PM) trippingmonkey: not on my primary
(10:51:18 PM) InHisName: I've done muti boot for years.
(10:51:29 PM) trippingmonkey: I multiboot on my secondary with windows and centos
(10:53:07 PM) trippingmonkey: what do you use?
(10:53:11 PM) InHisName: Just picked up a main box from curbside and found a 2Ghz w/ 30 Gb drive and 500 Megs memory. I put Virtual Box on it and now like it better than multi boot.
(10:54:06 PM) kb3ui: trippingmonkey, what a lot of us do on Monday nights is to work on Linux projects at home during the chat. That way, if we have any problems or just want to discuss what we're doing, we're close at hand.
(10:54:07 PM) InHisName: Win95, WinXP, debian, 3 othe linux, ubuntu, puppy, beosplanned and bunch of others.
(10:54:50 PM) kb3ui: Ubuntu, Knoppix, generic debian, and puppy.
(10:55:00 PM) trippingmonkey: hehe
(10:56:04 PM) InHisName: On Vbox I have WinXP, ubuntubase, puppy 2.16, puppy 3.15?, dsl, Knoppix, Tried OS2 but wont install, wanna try BeOS, ReactOS.
(10:56:40 PM) trippingmonkey: ive been wanting to play with plan9, but haven't gotten around to it
(10:56:50 PM) InHisName: The movie ?
(10:57:05 PM) kb3ui: We don't know what plan9 is.
(10:57:22 PM) trippingmonkey: no, it's a new os from bell labs
(10:57:42 PM) trippingmonkey: supposed to fix many of unix's deficiencies
(10:57:43 PM) InHisName: links ?
(10:57:53 PM) InHisName: is it Gnu ?
(10:57:54 PM) trippingmonkey: http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9/
(10:58:22 PM) trippingmonkey: lucent public license
(10:58:24 PM) trippingmonkey: whatever that is
(10:58:25 PM) InHisName: Hmmmm, fourth edition already
(10:59:51 PM) InHisName: Seems like fun
(11:03:47 PM) kb3ui: Looks as if it has been around since the 1980's.
(11:03:57 PM) InHisName: downloading the iso now
(11:03:59 PM) kb3ui: Not Gnu.
(11:04:17 PM) InHisName: then it must be Gnold
(11:04:27 PM) kb3ui: Source doesn't have to accompany derived works.
(11:04:34 PM) kb3ui: Gold.
(11:05:06 PM) trippingmonkey: yeah i don't get why it's been around for so long and nobody's heard of it
(11:05:51 PM) InHisName: Loads in machines with as little as 16Mb!
(11:06:04 PM) kb3ui: "In Plan 9, each process has its own mutable name space. A process may rearrange, add to, and remove from its own name space without affecting the name spaces of unrelated processes. Included in the name space mutations is the ability to <font size="3">mount a connection to a file server speaking 9P, a simple file protocol. The connection may be a network connection, a pipe, or any other file descriptor open for reading and
(11:06:39 PM) kb3ui: No working browser for the Internet.
(11:06:49 PM) InHisName: Hmmmm
(11:07:07 PM) InHisName: Hmmmm dinger!
(11:07:27 PM) kb3ui: It's like Unix only it's different.
(11:08:56 PM) kb3ui: George - I'll warn you about Rich - he'll con you into giving a short informal talk about Plan9 for our SIG's face-to-face meeting. Also, I should tell you that he's quite a night owl, and he'll keep you up to the wee hours if you let him.
(11:09:19 PM) trippingmonkey: hehe, trust me, I will do no such thing
(11:09:31 PM) kb3ui: I like the 16 MB. Somewhat like Puppy or Darned Small Linux.
(11:09:43 PM) kb3ui: Rich will certainly try.
(11:10:08 PM) kb3ui: It would certainly be of interest to our group.
(11:10:32 PM) trippingmonkey: I'll think about it, but i'm not much of a public speaker
(11:10:48 PM) InHisName: Came as a .bz2 archive. Only 80Megs ISO file
(11:10:56 PM) trippingmonkey: I always liked those really small distros
(11:11:06 PM) trippingmonkey: like the kind that can sit on a floppy
(11:11:39 PM) kb3ui: That's a shame, as the rest of us are all Distinguished Toastmaster speakers who will criticize you for your speaking style. :)
(11:11:55 PM) InHisName: I have Dos 3.1 and it only needs ONE floppy to boot fully.
(11:12:17 PM) kb3ui: Most of us like to give demonstrations, talking informally.
(11:12:23 PM) trippingmonkey: yeah, but once you boot up, there isn't much you can do
(11:12:55 PM) InHisName: bout the same as any other OS.
(11:13:14 PM) trippingmonkey: could you have a web and mail server boot up from a floppy in dos?
(11:13:18 PM) InHisName: One needs a project to do something anyway.
(11:13:50 PM) trippingmonkey: well, maybe not a mail server, but a web server
(11:13:58 PM) InHisName: I have had mail download automaticly upon boot up.
(11:15:16 PM) kb3ui: I think we'd be interested in seeing what you can do with it, and how it is similar and different from Unix.
(11:16:10 PM) trippingmonkey: well when i have a couple of nights free i will definitely look into it
(11:16:22 PM) kb3ui: Rich, he's weakening!
(11:16:33 PM) kb3ui: That would be great, George.
(11:17:11 PM) trippingmonkey: well i must be going, good talking
(11:17:11 PM) kb3ui: Doesn't have to be long - maybe 30 min. or so, unless you'd rather do something more substantial.
(11:17:17 PM) kb3ui: Likewise. Thanks for joining us tonight.
(11:19:06 PM) kb3ui: I've got something to do before I quit that will require me to shut down Linux, so I think I'll also call it a night.
(11:23:14 PM) kb3ui left the room (quit: ""Goodnight!"").
(11:24:23 PM) InHisName: you bears will have to bear it alone now
(03/04/2008 01:06:48 AM) Jfrost [n=Jfrost@h-66-167-56-111.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.
(01:21:49 AM) Jfrost left the room (quit: "Leaving").
