February 11th, 2008 Chat Session

IRC Chat on Freenode.net/#pacslinux

(07:29:57 PM) The topic for #pacslinux is: Flavors of Ubuntu and various specialized distributions

(07:30:30 PM) teddy-dbear [n=teddy-db@c-71-230-172-98.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(07:30:41 PM) burke-bear [n=burke-be@c-71-230-172-98.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(08:09:50 PM) norm77 [n=norm@c-76-116-4-147.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.

(08:26:44 PM) rich2506 [n=rich2506@c-69-249-33-239.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(08:26:58 PM) rich2506: hey y'all!

(08:28:03 PM) rmg: evening

(08:28:26 PM) rich2506: wuzzup?

(08:29:21 PM) rich2506: i've got a conference call for my anti-war group now

(08:29:23 PM) rmg: nothing much on my end

(08:29:38 PM) rmg: just hanging out with the bears

(08:29:59 PM) rich2506: kewl

(08:30:53 PM) rich2506: having some trouble installing flashplayer, is that a common problem?

(08:31:04 PM) rmg: for some

(08:31:48 PM) rmg: all I did was wait til I went to a site that needed it and let it happen all by itself

(08:32:39 PM) rich2506: huh, 'cause i tried more than once to download and install

(08:33:35 PM) jedijf: rich2506, ubuntu-restricted-extras

(08:33:41 PM) rmg: that's the way I did it on 3 installs

(08:34:01 PM) rich2506: just got off the line with my group, wrong hour

(08:34:03 PM) rmg: that's the other way to do it

(08:34:28 PM) rich2506: how do i get "restricted extras"?

(08:35:29 PM) rmg: just search for flash player in add/remove

(08:35:46 PM) rmg: it should be there

(08:36:02 PM) rmg: if not try synaptic

(08:37:28 PM) rich2506: movie player, gnash swf viewer, ifpgui, no flash player

(08:40:47 PM) rich2506: synaptic: couple of gnashs, libflash, klash, flash plug-in, no flash player

(08:41:54 PM) jedijf: search for ubuntu-restricted-extras

(08:42:10 PM) jedijf: that has java - flash - msfonts - and more

(08:42:56 PM) rmg: he should check to see if all the repositories are there

(08:43:27 PM) rich2506: lots of stuff beginning with lib

(08:44:03 PM) rich2506: kubuntu & xbuntu

(08:44:50 PM) teddy-dbear: This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Ubuntu

(08:44:50 PM) teddy-dbear: multiverse repository.

(08:44:50 PM) teddy-dbear: Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding,

(08:44:50 PM) teddy-dbear: support for various other audio formats (gstreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts,

(08:44:50 PM) teddy-dbear: Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files),

(08:44:51 PM) teddy-dbear: and DVD playback.

(08:45:38 PM) rmg: that's what you should see if you click on ubuntu-extras

(08:46:58 PM) rich2506: both terms get me back to ubuntu-restricted-extras

(08:47:40 PM) rich2506: it's 37 megs, should i go ahead and download?

(08:47:59 PM) jedijf: do you want to use the internet?

(08:48:06 PM) rich2506: yup

(08:48:49 PM) rmg: go for it

(08:49:03 PM) rmg: it wont break anything

(08:49:14 PM) ***jedijf crosses fingers

(08:49:46 PM) teddy-dbear: I would too if I had any

(08:51:58 PM) rich2506: it insisted i put in ubuntu 7.1 and now it's asking if i want to run upgrade

(08:52:18 PM) rich2506: or to start package manager

(08:52:33 PM) jedijf: STOP

(08:52:39 PM) rich2506: aye

(08:53:01 PM) jedijf: in synaptic go to settings -- repositories

(08:53:32 PM) jedijf: UNCHECK cd at the bottom - go down there are two entries

(08:53:37 PM) rich2506: aye

(08:54:31 PM) jedijf: make sure the four above are checked - all except source code (unless you want source code)

(08:54:36 PM) rich2506: now there's just one box checked

(08:54:49 PM) jedijf: no cd boxes should be checked

(08:55:06 PM) jedijf: check the first 4 out of 5 at the top ^^^^

(08:55:09 PM) jedijf: make sure the four above are checked - all except source code (unless you want source code)

(08:55:20 PM) jedijf: then click 'reload'

(08:55:25 PM) rich2506: ok, all four with exception of source code

(08:55:44 PM) jedijf: then click 'reload'

(08:56:51 PM) rich2506: erm don't see reload button

(08:57:05 PM) rich2506: there's a close

(08:57:14 PM) jedijf: close sources

(08:57:19 PM) jedijf: then click 'reload'

(08:57:52 PM) rich2506: hah! found it

(08:59:35 PM) jedijf: dl and install restricted extras then go to pacsnet.org and play the video on the right hand side

(09:00:14 PM) jedijf: http://pacsnet.org/promotion.php

(09:01:11 PM) rich2506: it's downloading 31 files now

(09:04:00 PM) rich2506: hmm, it sorta kinda works, flashes without anything coherent

(09:04:32 PM) rich2506: no sound either

(09:04:51 PM) norm77: If you had your browser open before you have to restart it.

(09:05:37 PM) norm77: It played on mine with no problem after I gave Vidder.com permission to run scripts.

(09:06:12 PM) jedijf: did you fully install flash yet?

(09:06:19 PM) jedijf: accept the terms and all that drama

(09:06:29 PM) jedijf: rich2506, ^^^^

(09:07:33 PM) norm77: Not that I know of. But I did install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package per Jim's instrutions.

(09:08:44 PM) norm77: Is that video a PSA ad for PACS to be broadcast on TV stations?

(09:09:05 PM) jedijf: no clue

(09:11:56 PM) rich2506: ok, restarting browser now

(09:14:46 PM) rich2506: @#$%@# no change from before

(09:16:57 PM) rich2506: should i reboot wholesale?

(09:18:21 PM) norm77: Give it a try, but I shouldn't be necessary. I've been on X-chat the whole time I DL'ed and installed the package.

(09:18:41 PM) jedijf: reinstall the package

(09:19:00 PM) jedijf: you should have to accept terms for flash and msfonts i believe

(09:19:22 PM) jedijf: or right click in the video window and see if gnash is running

(09:19:39 PM) norm77: That's interesting. I did not get those prompts.

(09:20:01 PM) rich2506: think i did that, ok i'll try rebooting

(09:20:06 PM) rich2506 left the room (quit: "Ex-Chat").

(09:20:38 PM) norm77: But, I've been through synaptic before, grabbing whatever I thoulght I would need in individual packages.

(09:21:03 PM) jedijf: he should have checked - i bet gnash was trying to play the video

(09:21:10 PM) jedijf: gnash sucks

(09:24:21 PM) norm77: Rich sometimes uses older computers. What would be the minimum video specs he would need to play flash video?

(09:24:56 PM) jedijf: shouldn't be an issue there - he never has sound, so that's not really relevant

(09:25:39 PM) InHisName [n=Administ@c-71-225-221-149.hsd1.pa.comcast.net] entered the room.

(09:38:05 PM) rmg: this is turning into one long reboot

(09:40:03 PM) jedijf: haha

(09:40:14 PM) ***jedijf was thinking the same thing

(09:40:48 PM) rmg: and he left us with nothing to talk about

(09:45:04 PM) jedijf: norm77, did you just do the restricted extras right now?

(09:48:33 PM) norm77: Yes, but I think I must have installed flash from before. When I went to full screen on the video, it restarted in flash player, apparently.

(09:49:24 PM) InHisName: Whoa! where is all the talk at this week ?

(09:49:34 PM) jedijf: rebooting

(09:50:23 PM) InHisName: Only 8 comments fully describe rebooting ?

(09:51:38 PM) InHisName: Don't we have a meeting coming up this Sat ?

(09:51:46 PM) rmg: nope

(09:51:52 PM) rmg: next Sat

(09:52:30 PM) InHisName: 4th Sat AGAIN ?

(09:52:51 PM) rmg: yep

(09:53:15 PM) InHisName: 3rd's cleared but not 4th that is another meeting.

(09:55:11 PM) norm77: For the last 3 years the February meeting always get pushed back to the 4th weekend due to President's Day (maybe the custiodian wants to go down the shore and work on his tan).

(10:17:37 PM) InHisName: all silent so far ?

(10:17:53 PM) norm77: What topics should we cover in the upcoming meeting?

(10:18:23 PM) rmg: how to maintain a chat session?

(10:27:00 PM) jedijf: hmm, can't think - maybe next week - goodnight

(10:27:04 PM) jedijf left the room ("Time to make the donuts.").

(10:42:06 PM) InHisName: <rmg51> how to maintain a chat session? Good Call, are you ready to present it ?

(10:42:52 PM) rmg: I need a lot of time to figure out how to do it

(10:42:52 PM) InHisName: rmg51, you could try and practice some of the principals here to boost the word count for tonight.

(10:43:34 PM) InHisName: norm77, your 2 cents for topics etc.

(10:44:12 PM) rmg: maybe I let Teddy give the talk

(10:45:34 PM) InHisName: He could type it up into 32 pages of "notes" and I could be his mouthpiece and speak (read) it to you all.

(10:46:18 PM) rmg: only you wont be there

(10:46:20 PM) InHisName: Of course we need something for the 2nd hour.

(10:46:42 PM) InHisName: Oooff, phooey.

(10:47:16 PM) InHisName: norm77, feel free to jump in anytime.

(10:49:16 PM) norm77: Well, JIm is slated to do some basic commands. Perhaps I could pre-install a virtual Linux under Windows and demo.

(10:50:48 PM) norm77: I also want to get back to F-spot. It choked on my desktop when it tried to catalog all of my HDDs before it would let me do anything...

(10:51:57 PM) InHisName: Excellent suggestions. Maybe more realistic than teddy-dbear typing up 32 pages for me to read as presentation.

(10:52:36 PM) norm77: ...but if I wire my notebook to the network and DL it, the program might be more responsive with 80Gb instead of 1.2 Tb to catalog.

(10:54:25 PM) InHisName: Not much different that using a 10GB drive. Either would work. 1,200Gb takes much longer.

(10:56:03 PM) norm77: I have also been having good success with several Windows USB apps in wine, but I think that might be a little far off the beaten path.

(10:57:37 PM) rmg: depends on who is at the meeting

(10:58:06 PM) rmg: I have never tried wine

(10:58:12 PM) norm77: When I pull F-spot up it automatically starts to catalog the pictures on my HDDs. I did not think that this would be a problem until it tried to catalog the temporary internet files in Windows...

(10:59:17 PM) norm77: ...after 5K pics of web banners, logos and model horses, I forced it to stop.

(10:59:22 PM) InHisName: I went out and bought one of those U3 mem sticks when Ben mentioned them. I put in the password capture thingy. Now I have record of all my passords in house.

(10:59:47 PM) InHisName: Might we figure how to do something like the U3 to run in Linux ?

(10:59:53 PM) norm77: Is that a trial app?

(11:00:11 PM) InHisName: No, gnu shareware.

(11:00:24 PM) InHisName: or maybe 'hackware'

(11:01:44 PM) norm77: I shy away from U3. I can get mirror apps for free at www.portableapps.com.

(11:05:06 PM) norm77: I have wine installed on this Ubuntu and I can use my WinUSB versions of Sunbird, Thunderbird, and Soduku without any problems. I do not even have to start wine manually first.

(11:09:54 PM) norm77: The only USB app that I know of that runs natively in Linux is (I think) MyPodder.

(11:12:23 PM) norm77: You can find MyPodder here: http://www.podcastready.com/download.php

(11:12:48 PM) InHisName: OK, I'll take a look

(11:14:39 PM) rmg: me, I think I'll look for my bed

(11:27:06 PM) burke-bear left the room (quit: "Leaving.").

(11:28:52 PM) teddy-dbear: night everyone

(11:28:57 PM) teddy-dbear left the room (quit: "Leaving.").

(11:29:59 PM) norm77: Goodnight, Randy. Goodnight, Rich.

(11:30:32 PM) norm77 left the room (quit: "Goodnight all!").
