(07:55:16 PM) Prayer: Helllllooooo ayone home yet ?
(07:56:30 PM) burke-bear: I'm here! :-D
(08:00:02 PM) Prayer: Unbearable! burke-bear
(08:01:25 PM) burke-bear: going to be a slow night
(08:03:12 PM) Prayer: why
(08:04:10 PM) burke-bear: ntr talk in LoCo room
(08:05:31 PM) Prayer: firewire wireless, laptops, ebay, dsl all last 10 min or so there.
(08:06:03 PM) Prayer: Any know about libtext-csv-perl ?
(09:07:42 PM) kb3ui [n=ubuntu@h-68-166-207-63.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.
(09:07:59 PM) Prayer: howdy kb3ui
(09:08:22 PM) burke-bear: 'lo
(09:09:18 PM) kb3ui: Good evening, Rich, Randy, and the group!
(09:09:42 PM) Prayer: lets begin yakkin it up now.
(09:10:20 PM) kb3ui: jedijf - did you ever get a chance to upload your notes about Linux commands from the December meeting?
(09:10:34 PM) jedijf: not yet
(09:10:52 PM) jedijf: or rather, at this point; what notes?
(09:10:54 PM) kb3ui: Ok. Understand.
(09:11:18 PM) kb3ui: What notes? You had offered to upload what you had discussed last month's meeting.
(09:11:39 PM) jedijf: memory expires after 12 hours
(09:11:55 PM) kb3ui: Use static rather than dynamic RAM :)
(09:12:13 PM) kb3ui: Or at least you need a refresh cycle. That's where I come in!
(09:12:54 PM) kb3ui: I can't even remember what you had discussed!
(09:13:14 PM) kb3ui: That's why I wanted to look at the notes before next Saturday.
(09:13:44 PM) jedijf: locate - passwd - adduser
(09:14:08 PM) kb3ui: See? That did help! Now I remember!
(09:14:23 PM) kb3ui: Especially the locate command which I've since tried.
(09:14:30 PM) jedijf: locate or find / -name xxxxx 2>/dev/null
(09:14:50 PM) jedijf: stuff like that
(09:15:14 PM) jedijf: updatedb to update the locate database
(09:15:28 PM) kb3ui: I recall it being basic administrative stuff. Don't recall updatedb, though.
(09:15:38 PM) kb3ui: Sure you got that far?
(09:15:53 PM) jedijf: with the find command the 2>/dev/null just sends the 'error' to the bit bucket
(09:16:32 PM) kb3ui: >/dev/null sends anything to the bit bucket.
(09:17:04 PM) jedijf: correct and 2 represents errors
(09:17:33 PM) kb3ui: Ah! I see! You don't want to see the error of your ways!
(09:17:47 PM) jedijf: so the screen doesn't fill up with junk and only the results that match the xxxxxx
(09:17:49 PM) jedijf: try it
(09:17:59 PM) kb3ui: Ok.
(09:18:06 PM) jedijf: find / -name xxxx 2>/dev/null
(09:18:20 PM) jedijf: find / means start a the root directory
(09:18:33 PM) jedijf: -name means look for this name
(09:18:37 PM) jedijf: xxxx is a file
(09:18:49 PM) jedijf: try with and without the 2>/dev/null
(09:19:47 PM) kb3ui: I just did, and it works!
(09:20:00 PM) kb3ui: Let me try without the 2...
(09:20:02 PM) jedijf: did you try without errors to bit bucket
(09:20:02 PM) Prayer: good for you!
(09:21:09 PM) Prayer: Any know about libtext-csv-perl ?
(09:21:17 PM) kb3ui: Oh, boy! I see what you mean - without the bit bucket!
(09:21:33 PM) Prayer: lot more errors to ignore
(09:21:55 PM) kb3ui: Tells me every directory it finds!
(09:26:08 PM) Prayer: don't slow down now. . . .
(09:29:08 PM) kb3ui: Just multitasking!
(09:29:53 PM) kb3ui: Hope we get a good turnout on Saturday - January often brings in a lot of new people to PACS.
(09:30:24 PM) Prayer: no new blood tonight unless you count burke-bear
(09:30:53 PM) rmg: and he's not a traveling bear
(09:35:25 PM) jedijf: it's been kind of slow in general - i hope this meeting on saturday breaks that trend
(09:35:48 PM) Prayer: Now if the bear could bring a few hundred chocolate tux figures ...... ummmm good.
(09:36:01 PM) kb3ui: I can't think of any new bear puns!
(09:36:28 PM) Prayer: I will only be there in the the earlier morning. It is NOT the 3rd sat.
(09:36:42 PM) kb3ui: Regardless of the turnout, I always enjoy coming and learning new stuff!
(09:36:45 PM) teddy-dbear: sounds like you are bearly here
(09:37:04 PM) kb3ui: That's not a new pun - that's as old as the hills!
(09:38:42 PM) teddy-dbear: what do you expect from a head full of stuffing =-O
(09:38:47 PM) Prayer: I bearly laughed!
(09:39:11 PM) kb3ui: Depends upon the quality of bread used to make the stuffing!
(09:40:17 PM) Prayer: jedijf, hear that bread & stuffing, jump in anytime, if you can bear it.
(09:40:46 PM) teddy-dbear: I can't bear it :-(
(09:42:33 PM) Prayer: teddy-dbear, you're too honey sweet, try being more grizzly
(09:42:46 PM) kb3ui: Ooh! That was good, Prayer!
(09:43:05 PM) teddy-dbear: that's from all the chocolate
(09:43:20 PM) Prayer: kb3ui, grab and camera could be a kodiak moment anytime.
(09:43:37 PM) kb3ui: Rich, you just have more talent than I do!
(09:45:26 PM) Prayer: kb3ui, some try to black ball you, I'll just black bear you.
(09:47:08 PM) kb3ui: Yes you do!
(09:48:50 PM) Prayer: kb3ui, earlier I was telling teddy-dbear about my favorite pastry, bear-claws. He said CHOCOLATE!!!!
(09:49:45 PM) kb3ui: I can see why he wouldn't like any discussion of eating bear-claws!
(09:50:34 PM) kb3ui: I would agree that chocolate is better, anyway.
(09:51:21 PM) teddy-dbear: yeah chocolate
(09:53:36 PM) Prayer: teddy-dbear, claims he has NO claws just paws!!
(09:54:05 PM) teddy-dbear: don't need them
(09:54:07 PM) Prayer: In keeping with being soft fuzzy and not sctrachy.
(09:54:26 PM) kb3ui: Why don't you pause?
(09:54:28 PM) teddy-dbear: I let other people scratch me
(09:54:43 PM) Prayer: No lovable 3yearold needs a clawey teddy bear.
(09:55:25 PM) rmg: how about an unlovable one?
(09:56:28 PM) Prayer: teddy-dbear, you might want to grow some claws then.
(09:56:42 PM) teddy-dbear: no way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(09:56:43 PM) Prayer: Ditch the chocolate too.
(09:56:51 PM) teddy-dbear: never!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
(09:57:17 PM) Prayer: Oh, you're just tooo lovable!
(09:57:36 PM) teddy-dbear: you better believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(09:58:35 PM) Prayer: and to think you were named after a "rough rider" hmmmmm
(09:58:49 PM) Prayer: and a president
(09:59:01 PM) kb3ui: Roosevelt!
(09:59:07 PM) kb3ui: (the first one)
(09:59:46 PM) kb3ui: He refused to shoot a bear cub, with the press watching, and the bear got the name, "teddy bear".
(10:04:55 PM) kb3ui: Grrrrrrr!
(10:07:05 PM) Prayer: No GroWWWllll
(10:07:55 PM) kb3ui: http://GroWWWllll
(10:09:02 PM) Prayer: server not found
(10:09:18 PM) rmg: same here
(10:09:37 PM) Prayer: My browser assumed a .com attached to it
(10:10:29 PM) Prayer: none for .net .edu .us
(10:10:29 PM) kb3ui: I was at a restaurant last weekend looking for my waiter, and I got that same error message.
(10:10:37 PM) kb3ui: Server not found!
(10:11:26 PM) Prayer: Customer gone
(10:11:30 PM) rmg: punishing
(10:12:05 PM) kb3ui: You're right - PUNishing!
(10:12:30 PM) Prayer: oooooooh
(10:12:51 PM) Prayer: I cant bear it
(10:13:29 PM) kb3ui: That's where we started, Rich!
(10:13:57 PM) kb3ui: Anybody know what's happening with the Database SIG?
(10:14:12 PM) rmg: no
(10:14:20 PM) Prayer: it is quiet
(10:14:51 PM) Prayer: I heard a roumor that SUN bought mysql !
(10:15:16 PM) Prayer: How can you buy an open source thingy ?
(10:17:39 PM) kb3ui: You'd be surprised - these open source thingys somehow have their revenue streams - perhaps from a related product.
(10:21:24 PM) Prayer: Official word at: http://www.mysql.org/news-and-events/sun-to-acquire-mysql.html
(10:28:09 PM) kb3ui: SUN will make money the same way MySQL AB made money, and probably more of it!
(10:29:39 PM) Prayer: Aparently was Swedish co that owned (and opened source it). Therefore could sell it.
(10:36:55 PM) kb3ui: They probably have other products that work with MySQL. By sponsoring it, they have control over its form and function, probably to their advantage.
(10:37:15 PM) jedijf: oo front end :)
(10:39:40 PM) kb3ui: jedijf - have you looked at their code?
(10:39:49 PM) Prayer: Oracle has several, IBM has several, uSoft has two or so. SUN needs at least one.......
(10:40:06 PM) Prayer: databases
(10:40:40 PM) kb3ui: "MSQL AB supports both open source values and corporate customers' needs." The corporate customers provide the revenue.
(10:41:24 PM) jedijf: kb3ui, not recently, but oo base is a front end for mysql - so it is a fit that can be developed /much/ further
(10:43:37 PM) kb3ui: Interesting!
(10:43:54 PM) kb3ui: And, of course, that's what SUN probably plans to do!
(10:52:08 PM) kb3ui: The SUN never sets on the British Empire!
(10:53:35 PM) kb3ui: Be interesting to see how the stock market reacts - we'll probably hear from both the bulls and the BEARS!
(10:56:28 PM) teddy-dbear: not this bear
(10:56:43 PM) burke-bear: not this one either
(10:58:04 PM) kb3ui: That's a lot of BULL!
(10:58:18 PM) kb3ui: or rather, a lot of BULLS!
(10:58:52 PM) rmg: that jedijf department
(10:59:03 PM) rmg: Red Bull
(10:59:13 PM) kb3ui: Yes, the Red kind!
(11:04:18 PM) Prayer: kb3ui, you been hittin the bull too much tonight.
(11:05:30 PM) kb3ui: I think we all have!
(11:05:43 PM) kb3ui: We probably should call it a night!
(11:06:02 PM) kb3ui: An unBEARable night!
(11:11:06 PM) Jfrost [n=Jfrost@h-68-166-207-179.phlapafg.dynamic.covad.net] entered the room.
(11:15:46 PM) rmg: figures, the old one are ready for bed and the young one just shows up
(11:16:08 PM) jedijf: lol
(11:17:02 PM) teddy-dbear: I'm just ready for bowling
(11:17:26 PM) burke-bear: mr too
(11:17:42 PM) burke-bear: dang paws
(11:17:47 PM) burke-bear: me too
(11:18:31 PM) teddy-dbear: they pop in but don't say anything
(11:18:58 PM) Norm76 [n=Norm76@c-76-116-4-147.hsd1.nj.comcast.net] entered the room.
(11:19:12 PM) rmg: here we go again
(11:19:27 PM) Norm76: Nice to "see" you too.
(11:19:44 PM) rmg: start time is 8:00 not 11:18
(11:20:20 PM) rmg: long day at work?
(11:20:34 PM) Norm76: Wife's birthday is tomorrow and I have to live with her, so you guys come in second.
(11:21:05 PM) teddy-dbear: what's that got to do with tonight?
(11:21:57 PM) Norm76: Went out & got one more gift, gift bags, & the all important card before the big day hits.
(11:22:01 PM) kb3ui left the room (quit: "See you all on Saturday!").
(11:22:02 PM) Prayer: it is his wife's birthday eve , silly
(11:22:29 PM) teddy-dbear: shop early and often
(11:23:03 PM) teddy-dbear: this is cutting into our bowling time!!
(11:23:26 PM) rmg: and I need my sleep
(11:23:57 PM) Norm76: Falling behind on beauty sleep?
(11:24:08 PM) Prayer: stuffit bear, go bowling after rmg51 sleeps.
(11:24:19 PM) rmg: trying to stay awake at work
(11:24:36 PM) teddy-dbear: we do that anyway
(11:25:23 PM) Norm76: So, any last minute thoughts on Saturday?
(11:25:49 PM) teddy-dbear: show up, eat chocolate!
(11:26:03 PM) Prayer: I'll be in early leave at 11
(11:27:51 PM) Norm76: Any particular "flavor" of Ubuntu we should be looking at?
(11:28:30 PM) Prayer: strawberry, No, wait ---- Chocolate!!!
(11:29:42 PM) Jfrost: haha
(11:31:04 PM) teddy-dbear: Chocolate with caramel inside
(11:33:04 PM) ***Norm76 rolls eyes
(11:33:25 PM) ***teddy-dbear rubs tummy
(11:34:15 PM) Norm76: I prefer raspberry-phhhhhhlt!
(11:35:24 PM) teddy-dbear: now your just getting sloppy
(11:36:53 PM) Norm76: Besides Kubuntu and Xubuntu, are there any other ISOs that we should download and burn for Saturday?
(11:37:11 PM) rmg: dsl?
(11:38:04 PM) Norm76: How does it run on notebooks?
11:38:51 PM) rmg: that's for jedijf to answer
(11:38:52 PM) jedijf: fast
(11:39:45 PM) Prayer: MythTV ? Christian ubuntu ?
(11:40:43 PM) Norm76: Myth TV sounds interesting, but I'm don't know what I could show off about it at the meeting on my notebook.
(11:43:01 PM) Norm76: Do Kubuntu and Xubuntu 7.10 have the main distribution install problems that Ubuntu Gutsy has?
(11:44:13 PM) jedijf: Xubuntu isn't a canonical official cd, and i am unsure about the kubuntu live cd's
(11:45:17 PM) rmg: I need my sleep
(11:45:24 PM) jedijf: me too
(11:45:36 PM) rmg: keep chatting if you want to
(11:46:02 PM) Norm76: Should I consider rolling back to 7.04 to get a successful install on virtual box (and then upgrade)?
(11:46:02 PM) rmg: I'll stay on for the log
(11:46:27 PM) jedijf: Norm76, no use alternate install cd's for installs anyway
(11:48:02 PM) Norm76: We want the new guys to be able to easily duplicate what we demo on their computers.
(11:49:00 PM) jedijf: yeah
(11:49:12 PM) jedijf: try with live - install with alternate
(11:49:30 PM) jedijf: less install issues in general
(11:49:42 PM) Norm76: I would like to get a virtual install done this time, so the new members can see it as an easy way to get their "feet wet" with Linux.
(11:50:05 PM) jedijf: live requires 256 megs ram - alternate only needs 64 megs -
(11:50:49 PM) Norm76: and I'm still not back up to 1 Gb ram on the notebook. Good point.
(11:51:09 PM) jedijf: that's a waste of time - a virtual install is the same as a regular install, so there is 45 minutes to an hour of 'down' time
(11:52:39 PM) jedijf: virtualbox is real intuitive - just pointing them at it should be enough
(11:53:33 PM) jedijf: the wizards walk you right through it - at least for 'regular' stuff, not odd stuff like os2
(11:54:18 PM) Prayer: I can't get OS2 disk to start installing.... Has failure during bootup.
(11:55:06 PM) jedijf: dsl was a little different, but not really different than a regular dsl install, since its an enigma anyway
(11:56:36 PM) jedijf: ok guys/gals goodnight - have to get some sleep - see everyone saturday
(11:56:39 PM) jedijf left the room ("Time to make the donuts.").
(11:56:55 PM) Prayer: I loaded 2 puppies, WinXP, and ReactOS
(11:57:42 PM) Prayer: jfrost have you used libtext-csv-perl ?
(01/22/2008 12:01:37 AM) Jfrost: its just a commma seperated value thingy
(12:15:40 AM) Norm76: Goodnight, group. See you Saturday.
(12:17:46 AM) Norm76 left the room (quit: "Goodnight all!").
(12:48:20 AM) Prayer: nitey nite bears
(12:48:25 AM) Prayer left the room ("Leaving").
